The way it was explained to me is we must scan in the buyer's badge AND the other player badge at the same time to properly work the system. I signed a paper saying I would abide by their rules, so I can't allow ghosts according to how it works -- unless that person has 9 other real badges.

Jeff,

I can't fault you on this... not your decision but it is a problem that GenCon has made for you.

With respect, how soon before I know if I need to find players for the tickets I was planning on ghosting?

I would hate to be out all the money when the purchase was made with the expectation to be able to ghost...

Thanks!!!

First off, I write this with all due respect and hope to not offend anybody... However (which is always a bad thing to say as a segway)...

Don't say nobody.

I for one am planning on ghosting at GenCon and invested over 40 personal tickets on tickets for runs.

I said “farming,” not “ghosting.”

Farming = running a ghost primarily to grab the loot for a profit.

You’re not “farming.” So I respectfully disagree with, but am not offended by, your disagreement :)

Brad,

I guess I don't understand the difference... other than intent. I am ghosting some 5-man runs for the challenge but what makes it worth it is the treasure from the ghosts... but isn't that farming? Ghosting is what I would be doing, but only if I got the treasure to make up the other $390 for the "unused" 5 tickets... and since I have 10 COA's and 10 nuggets, I would get 95 additional treasure plus 5 additional (or possibly 10) completion tokens.

I guess it is an idea of "intent" but by your definition, I would be "farming" and "ghosting" since I am doing it partially for the treasure...

Obviously, if Jeff has to make the no ghosting rule because of his contract with GenCon, I will abide by it, I just wish this would have come to light before purchasing tickets... Maybe I will bring a couple more of my children with me to "play" a couple of the tickets I intended for ghosting (Age limit is 12, right? I have two more sons who I would have to just by a pass and plane ticket for).

Mongo - to me it’s intent. Your primary purpose is to play and have fun.

I go back to the MMORPG days. Some games had hordes of “players” who camped the best spots to get the drops and gold to sell on eBay. They often disrupted the game and ruined it for people who just wanted to have fun.

If people are buying as many runs as they can just because each $50 ticket gains them an average of (say) $70 in treasure, that’s farming by ghosting. That’s why the satellites need some limits.

If you want to play solo and the fact your $78 tickets give you $70 in treasure so now it’s affordable but you’re not turning a profit, that’s not farming.

That’s just how I look at it. The views expressed are just my opinion and don’t necessarily reflect anyone else’s.

I would have liked to have known about this change before tickets went on sale. Ah well.
I like the change and think its a smart move. 10 is fairly reasonable number.

Good thing not to change Ghosting for gencon.

Same here.

Will the system reject scans for overlapping runs?

This brings up a good point. Can anyone’s extra badge get scanned for this purpose? Can that extra badge be scanned multiple times for the same run? Can it be scanned multiple times for different runs? What if those different runs have overlapping times? If the system blocks the extra tickets from being “transferred” to another badge when that extra badge has overlapping run times, that will cause yet further problems.

It is difficult to solve potential problems when we don’t fully know how the e-tickets system works yet.

I know the system allowed me to get multiple badges last year and to have events overlap between the badges. Both badges had the same name but a different number.

Then after the convention I emailed Derek Gruder to recombine the two accounts and ended back where I started.

Is there any way to push back on Gen Con about this?

Frankly it's nuts that Gen Con is trying to change their policy around this as a side effect of going to electronic tickets, and appears to be doing so without an understanding of the impact it has on one of their premier events.

In the past when they were paper, I got X tickets with my name on them, and I was free to dispose of them how I liked.

Now with electronic tickets I am being told I need X-1 people standing around for the purpose of barcode scanning.

There is no obvious good reason for this new restriction, it's not a value add to me as a player, it doesn't seem to be a value add to you as a a GM/exhibitor, and I can't see how it's a benefit to Gen Con (unless maybe they think people are playing in events without a badge and/or scalping tickets?).

I would request that you request that Gen Con provide TD with 9 valid barcodes assigned to "flex player 1", "flex player 2", ... and so on, and allow these barcodes to be used to register players as they arrive to claim their wristbands.
