TOPIC: Rod of Seven Parts Character Cards are HERE

Re: Rod of Seven Parts Character Cards are HERE 9 years 8 months ago #13

These are really great. Now I may have to figure out a way to get the rod segments I'm missing.

well, I will be playing druid summoner on a 5-person nightmare run.
then my other voucher will either go to my wife playing bard (to guarantee treasure stamps) or my best friend to play assassin if we hear that the treasure rooms aren't too bad.

So was the wizard prestige class supposed to lose it's 3rd level spells?

Does Elevate Spell increase the per enemy damage of multitarget spells like burning hands by 15 per target?

Adds to the next spell, says nothing about targets. At best, you may get 15 points to divide if that spell has multiple targets. Worst case, you add 15 to one of the targets if it is multiple targets.

That would make sense, but would make an already mediocre spell that much worse.

Here's my take on the Sorcerer's 2nd level spells:

Ray of Shock: 18 Shock damage to one target, slide 15 to hit. More than double the base damage of Magic Missile, but less then double the Skill Test damage of MM. As a slide to hit it is an all or nothing, but the items that improve a Wizard's slide help. And it can score a crit with RoWizardry. This is a solid spell.

Stone Storm: 15 Force damage, auto hit. Hits all targets. If this just hit one target I would call it a solid spell again. Auto hit is nice, and Force damage is less likely to suffer from resistance, but also less likely to hit a weakness. But again, slides are less likely to trouble anyone with the means to play the Sorc, and have their own advantages.

But this spell hits all targets. Which is does not happen too often outside of Grind, but often enough to make this a very good spell.

Elevate Damage: Next spell does +15 damage. Weak. It has two uses, barely.

It is okay with the Evoker's Charm. Cast this spell, and use the Charm with your next spell, and you get 15 extra damage without having to pay the extra HP. Unfortunately, if you begin to factor in other items that increase spell damage, it becomes less useful. Near best case scenario: A Sorc with the Ring of Greater Focus, Ring of Supreme Focus, and Cabal Bracers with a full set in the party. All spells are +11 damage. Ray of Shock does 29 instead of 18. And an Elevated Ray of Shock does 44. Except that instead of of Elevate Damage, you could have cast Ray of Shock again, for a total of 58 damage. With the Evoker's Charm, you then have a choice of 88 damage for 10 HP, or 116 damage for 20 HP.

Elevate Damage is also useful if the monster reduces spell damage. If the foe takes -10 damage from spells, two RyoSh only do 16 total damage, while an Elevated RyoSh does 23. But again, if your items increase your spell damage, that benefit is quickly removed. At +6 spell damage, any benefit to casting this spell is gone.

Here is my suggestion (presuming it is not too late):

Make Stone Storm 12 or 15 damage with a Skill Test. Not a huge change, but the little risk helps balance it out.

As for Elevate Damage? I would either allow item modifiers to also work on ElDam (so with the +11 damage items listed above, ElDam would give your next spell +26). Or I would replace it with:

Energy Echo: Does 10 Sonic damage to one target. Adds 10 points of damage to the next spell you cast.

If I were to benefit for once a year per one completed rod, then the stat need to change one more than just re-words it. All the stat is the same as before with no beneficial from the Rod, just reworded different like the Bard has two 2nd lvl. spell different than the rest is the same for a 5th lvl. This is what I'm waiting for long seven years is just a small rewording of the two 2nd lvl. spell. Then you have the elf wizard has a total different spell use. I'm talk about unequal distribute of power when a simple stat change improve by one is all you need to be even for all would fine. Then to reword will be appropriate after the stat change. But to have a words change here and there is nothing to exciting me about it. Sorry, but I'm not impress with this new character cards.

My understanding was that the prestige classes were to add flavor, not be super powered.

There are some nice bits on those cards. The ability to guarantee stamps in two rooms. The taunt ability, especially combined with the cloak of shadowskin. I like the Dwarven Defender's abilities, though I would have loved to see taunt on that class. I love the fight after death ability on the Barbarian. That's gonna need a spell surge to fix. ;)

And the benefits of the eldritch set make the rod a big deal without adding an additional stat boost.

I don't find this disappointing at all. I'm only disappointed that I didn't discover TD sooner.

I love the classes. I wish I had the RoSPs now.

It more like sub-class than Prestige-class to me. Like I said that the wording is unequal distribute of power in it of self are just more or less desire as if you build a class that is unfavorable like the wizard. If you did not fuse Rod of Seven Parts together then it will be more beneficial than to have it fuse together with wording different because it totally change stat than to change the wording around. I guess no one is playing wizard this year. I'm not stating that it will be super power, but stating 1-7 segment separate it is more power than the completed rod, but downgraded by rewording it is all I'm saying. The things is that 1-7 segments with it separate you can use it on all your runs from two to tenth run because your improve stat with the segment 1-7. Beside prestige mean honor and commanding position in people's mind. Going in the dungeon with these rod fused is not even commanding position, just sub-class it.

I'll agree that the unfused segments are more flexible. If you are equipping more than one person.

I don't see how it is less powerful though, especially for Druid and Ranger given the eldritch set benefits.

The Eldritch set bonus plus the Lenses of Divine Sight are a big deal.

Or do you mean the combined Rod only boosts your stats once per year? That is not so, the restriction is only on the prestige class. The stats boost every time.
