In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Level 5 Fighter "Benefit"

Level 5 Fighter "Benefit" 10 years 9 months ago #1

Not sure of where to put this, but since TD Management recently sent out that email which shows exactly what all the level 5 class benefits are in one place, I was struck again by just how truly terrible the Fighter benefit is as compared to every other class.

Resliding takes time and slows down combat. As long-time players, we all know that the clock is the real party-killer. As such, being allowed to reslide is, at best, something that will never happen or, at worst, a punishment. Compare to the Barbarian's Greater Rage, the +2 Sharpshooter damage for Ranger or the X3 Crit of the Dwarf Fighter.

As such, I'm trying to drum up support for an eventual level 5 Fighter benefit change, even if it's just to the Dwarf Fighter level 5 bonus.

In my personal, absolutely non-official opinion, four weeks before Gen Con is not the best time to discuss this topic. My best suggestion would be to revisit the subject in January or after the 2014 tokens have been finalized.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Fair enough, I didn't mean for this year, just something to think about. I'll bump this in October or so.

Agreed, the Level 5 Fighter ability mentioned here would be better if it was changed to a static, always-on, no-extra-slide-required ability like that of the Dwarven Fighter.

And also agreed, that bringing this up later, like in Sept or Oct would be better.

I've actually thought that the re-slide ability was pretty nice. It can be the difference between a hit and a miss (and the Fighter does significant damage on a hit), and if you're using a special weapon that does something like kills on a "20" slide, having two shots at it can be pretty nice. It never seemed like one re-slide was that much of a time-waster, it probably takes less time than one Wizard/Cleric/Druid skill check.

So slightly off topic: How does one get on this mailing list?

I don't run Nightmare, so I can't speak to that, but for other difficulties (at least prior to Hardcore), it's actually impossible for the Fighter to miss with decent red gear. As long as you're on the monster, you don't miss.

I consider the 20 to be such a small target that specifically trying for it is usually not worth it - even aiming for it appears to be more a matter of luck than skill. As such, I don't consider getting two shots at it to be of substantial benefit. And again, compare to a flat +2 damage to Sharpshooting for the Ranger.

The question of Hardcore monster ACs is actually a really good reason to revisit this after GenCon, since we'll have more data.

Legion, I believe I got on the mailing list when I first signed up for a TD account at GenCon?

On Nightmare with enough gear, you really can't miss as long as you get on the monster(Not always true). I believe I had a +12 to hit without bardsong so a +14 total last year, and even on Smoak I slid a 11 on my second puck and the GM looked at it and the sheet and went, um ok yeah you still hit with a 11.... So I could see that with the right gearing, the second slide on a fighter would just be to see if you got a lucky crit.
You don't have to outrun the monster, just the guy next to you - The buddy system.

I actually like the re-slide 5th level ability. I've had some bad slides over the past many years and getting a re-do is nice.

I believe it was jeff himself who has said that not all classes are meant for every person. Meaning that while many people may not like a class, there are others who do.
i can understand liking this reslide ability; with a class that shouldnt ever miss it would be disappointing to land outside the monster outline, or maybe you are really good at bumping and want two shots at it, or just need the first slide to knock away a horrible undershoot by a teammate.
