TOPIC: Does Mage Armor Stack with Chain?

Does Mage Armor Stack with Chain? 18 years 11 months ago #13

From the d20 SRD (which is online):

Armor/Shield Bonus: Each armor grants an armor bonus to AC, while shields grant a shield bonus to AC. The armor bonus from a suit of armor doesn’t stack with other effects or items that grant an armor bonus. Similarly, the shield bonus from a shield doesn’t stack with other effects that grant a shield bonus.

Mage Armor
Conjuration (Creation) [Force]
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: No
An invisible but tangible field of force surrounds the subject of a mage armor spell, providing a +4 armor bonus to AC.
Unlike mundane armor, mage armor entails no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or speed reduction. Since mage armor is made of force, incorporeal creatures can’t bypass it the way they do normal armor.
Focus: A piece of cured leather.

Thanks, WTC.

Because Mage Armor is an armor bonus in its own right, it doesn't stack with the armor bonus that leather or plate or what-have-you provides. I knew it was there somewhere. *grins*

Of course, if strict rules applied, Bracers of Armor wouldn't stack with regular armor or Mage Armor either (they are all armor bonuses). Amulets are have a Natural Armor bonus, which does stack. (Stuff like Rings of Protection have a Deflection Bonus).

I would suggest TD does NOT start separating out Armor, Shield, Natural Armor, and Deflection bonuses, as that is too complicated for a 2 hour run. If we really got into d20 rules, you couldn't wear Gauntlets and Bracers at the same time either.

Grins back...and also if strict 3.5 rules were in effect - the mage could put MArmor on anyone...

I asked the same of Jeff when the FAQ came out. Unless he has changed his mind, the Chain and Mage Armor DO stack. So yes, a Bard can have a better AC than a Fighters. :P

I asked Jeff this one also. Mage Armor works only for bards and wizards (that is, only for the caster) of Mage Armor... Erik
