Another hypothetical example could be that we have a monster that has a special hatred for Clerics. This monster will pursue a Cleric to destruction with no consideration to its own life. A cloak might save the Cleric in that case.

Douglas,

I certainly hope Jeff doesn't implement a "class hunting" creature. This hardly seems fair, cloak or not.

IMHO, of the three cloak options, in its current state, the Cloak of Elvenkind seems to be the weakest.

Oh well,

Hmm...in the last room last year, our paladin seemed to have a huge target painted on him.

I thought about this some more and decided, rather than scare you with random nightmare monsters (sorry Gary), I would use some specific examples from last year. Now I know the token rules are different from last year, but work with me here on this one. Let’s say you experience the same scenario this year with the new rules.

Example 1: You and your party find yourselves in the “Efreet room with the Faceless One hurling magic missiles at you from above. Other than the one or two creative players that physically hid under the table (yes there were a few) there was no place in that room that an individual could hide or find cover. Let’s say you just got blasted for 5 hp damage and you can’t take any more. Maybe your Cleric died in the “Spiders Lair so no chance for healing. Now you could argue that the cloak might not work against the Faceless One, but I would say that would be a perfect way of saving one’s life and as a DM, I would allow it.

Example 2: Not every room is designed to provide a safe place for a player to remove himself from combat. Take the “Crypt Room which was basically a 10’x10’ room. I would submit that angering a resting man sized zombie with a 6’ bastard sword would put everyone in the room in peril. If you have 6 or seven people in a 10x10 room someone really could not declare, “I am removing myself from combat. Now if they did not want to attack that is one thing, but since the described man sized monster can take no more than two steps and reach any part of the room with its six foot sword. Everyone in the room is fair game for the randomization attack role in my way of looking at things. If the player had the cloak however, they would be relatively safe. The only exception to this would be if other players declared they were shielding the wounded party member with their body. That was actually declared once or twice and it did effectively remove the shielded player from the possible targets, but I hope you see the point.

As far as class hunting creatures go, that was my imagination, however, we have not in the past played much on the good vs. evil thing too much. In the first module, most of the traps and creatures were more neutral than anything, and not specifically evil. However, in the second year, clearly Rodney, the zombie, the Efreet, and the Faceless One were evil. I do not believe we penalized the Paladin for allowing Rodney or the Efreet from being released, an event that should have been a very traumatic experience for a Lawful Good character to free an Evil one. I only had a few players recognize this and protest to their team members (yes this is role playing, but indulge me, OK?). Similarly, a shining beacon of Goodness that the Paladin and presumable the Cleric are, should have enraged a truly evil character to the degree I mentioned earlier, essentially making them a class specific homing monster. I am not saying this would really happen, I am just suggesting several possibilities that could occur to make the player’s lives interesting, that we have yet to pursue.

I know it seems that some of the items may be “crippled but given time they will either be further modified or situations in the dungeon may arise that would make them more valuable. I am out of hypothetical situations to suggest however, so I hope the explanations suffice.

*wipes sleep out of eyes - and makes note to self to take off elven cloak in a day or two*

Finally saw the Grudge - it make take me a few days to put down the +1 Greatsword I have as well - and I don't even know how to use it. ;)

Aww.... I liked Rodney. :P

Thanks Dave. Although I must say for a system that its trying to remain simple, this is a VERY complex item and it sounds like it is open to subjective interpretation by the DM which could potentially cause more problems than it is worth. Like in the crypt room, I could see someone with the cloak, getting upset because they were trying to hide and the DM wouldn't let them. They arguing that there should be plenty of room to hide. Just an example but you see where this is going.

Personally, I would encourage a simple but useful function for the cloak like you can not be attacked the first round, period. Or you can remove yourself from combat at anytime, period.

I know that you had a situation (with Raven's group I believe) where the non-cloaked 1/2 of the party was decimated but really, I think this is the exception. Three or four cloaks together when only like 30 exist for 3000 slots seems very rare (well maybe the TOKN group will) but you see what I am saying. Also, cloak aside, if you wanted to "screw" someone in your party you could anyway (withholding healing, removing yourself from combat, etc.) Did the cloaked 1/2 in your room all withdrawl from combat? As I understand it, this could happen anyway.

Well, some things to think about anyway. I hope either way you decide, it works out.

Thanks again for the follow up,
Douglas

not that it matters since there are only 3 of them in existence but what can you use the ring of 3 wishes for. I mean can you wish for anything or does it have its limits. do you have to have perfect phaseology or be screwed by the DM

Any use of the ROTW that was not an easy call for the DM would defer to Jeff to grant or deny. I would imagine that dealing with Jeff would be very much like the Genies of legend. Be careful what you wish for....

Dave
Before I found this post, I posted the same question elsewhere just a few minutes ago...sorry!

I believe in a reply to a post of mine, dbradical, had informed me that there is no limit to the # of tokens a player can take into a TD event.
If that's the case, then what is the purpose of the Bag of Holding? I like having the token to collect, but I'm wondering if it has functionality?

What about limiting the # of tokens/items a player can carry into TD? Then establish that the BoH could hold 4-5 items inside it, thus extending the # of tokens a player could carry and giving the BoH usefulness?

Thanks all,

JKW

The Bag of Holding is simply a novelty item. It's a symbolic token that comes along with the "collector's kit" binder, and has no functional purpose.

As for limiting the number of tokens a player can take in, that number would have to be so high that counting would take far too long, and cheating would be far too easy. A person can wear 11 tokens simply in armor and weapons, and if you add the hand of glory and its ring, 13. With things like masterwork arrows/bolts, potions, scrolls, and other expendables, the number starts climbing higher and higher. Also, if one's going so far as to declare a token limit for "realism," how can one make a scroll count for as much as a battle axe?

While I think it would be an interesting attempt, I believe any attempt to limit token carriage would simply be a lot of paperwork, a lot of hassle, no fun for players, and a futile effort to boot. I guarantee that if you let me pat a person down, I'll find any token they have on their body that isn't in a reeeeal nasty place, but we can't do that to our players :-)
