TOPIC: Wizard in need of advice

Re: Wizard in need of advice 15 years 9 months ago #25

Why did the cleric refuse to heal him? It's a shame that the dm couldn't have applied a penalty to the cleric for not playing their class properly.

Kim

Well - it's not that the Cleric refused to heal him so much, as it was that it was the first time that we'd ever played, and we just didn't realize that the damage was adding up as fast as it was, or that the Wizard had that few of hit points. The Wizard said he asked the Cleric to heal him in the second room, but our Cleric said he hadn't heard the Wizard during the confusion. We tried to solve the puzzle/trap in the first room and failed three times, with everyone in the group taking 6 damage. We then tried to solve the puzzle/trap in the second room, and failed three times in a row again, with everyone taking 6 more damage - and then the Wizard was dead.

We all felt terrible about our Wizard dying so soon, especially since we could easily have prevented it with a healing spell before trying to solve the puzzle a third time, but we just hadn't realized what was happening. Of course - our Wizard did go down in history as the quickest to die. I don't think it's even possible to die before room 3 anymore. Our Cleric is really a great team player, and heals everyone that needs it if he has spells, he just didn't realize the Wizard was about to die.

Karma caught up with our Cleric though, as Death came for him in room 4 because he had to go to the bathroom. We lost a few more party members within a couple more rooms, but our Bard and I (playing the Ranger) did make it to the final room, to the amazement of our DM, since we took so much damage and lost so many party members so early in the adventure.

We did have photos of our first TD run in articles in the Knights of the Dinner Table comic, since the KoDT creator as well as people a couple of the characters were based on were part of our party (the Cleric & Wizard, actually) =)

I thought your recounting of your adventure sounded very familiar. That article in KOTD was the reason that my friend Scott and I came to GenCon the following year and how we got wrapped up in TD.
David

That is SO COOL, David! I'm sure Jolly Blackburn (the KoDT creator and TD article writer) would love to hear that, I'll pass that on to him. I wonder how many people decided to play based on the KoDT articles =)

They had planned on writing an article on the run we did last year as well, I'm not sure if that happened or not (although I'm sure it will eventually if it hasn't already).

Thanks for posting that Jeff - that brings back a LOT of great memories! And you can see that our Cleric really was a great guy, it's just that we also had a selfless Wizard that wanted everyone else to get healed before him.

That bit with the Rogue going through the tunnel was one of the coolest things in any dungeon yet, and the Chest of Drawers was great fun as well. We felt really proud of ourselves for figuring out to command the Troll to jump to his death in the bottomless pit instead of fighting him (and we were told that many parties had Total Party Kill in that room fighting the Troll) - that was the best use of a spell we've ever had in True Dungeon. I really did like how lethal the dungeon was that year, I hope that we get that same feeling from Nightmare this year.

Hi there - I also have a question about Wizards. When you cast a damaging spell from a scroll token, do you have to slide the token and get above a certian AC, or do they auto-hit, or does it change from token to token?

If it varies, does anyone know which scrolls need to be slid and which don't?

I believe the notation on the token is your guide. Some indicate a required score, others are automatic.
