TOPIC: Wizard in need of advice

Re: Wizard in need of advice 15 years 8 months ago #13

The best way to enjoy TD is to guess what? That's right! Do whatever you want when you want. Not wondering what the others will think. Be the best of what you think that class is and giving it your best effort. Right, wrong or indifferent you will be there for the group. Nobody will be able to fault you for that.

Gamingetc,

There is some good advice here. One thing to consider, there are other (more powerful in my opinion) classes that will also be available to you. Wizards are somewhat tough to play for a first time TDer and typically they are expensive in terms of burning tokens if you want to be effective. You might talk to your group and find out which classes are left. There might be a better option for you like the Druid which is my personal favorite.

Hope this helps! =)

The Druid class can be pretty vulnerable too if you don't have the Dragonscale items (which you may have Michelle). If any of the "Tank" classes are available (fighter, cleric, paladin) those are good for beginning characters also. The Ranger and Barbarian are also both good for beginning players.

Thanks for all the input. I feel much better now =) I just wanted to make sure I did everything I could to be successful for the group and myself. This will be the 1st thing I have done in 6 years at Gencon. Between the booth and my son (who is 6) I never have time to do anything, so I want to do it right. From the beginning it did seem that a Wizard was not the easiest character to play, but the group needs one so I happily volunteered. After reading all of your posts I am pretty confidant I will be ok, and if not I'm sure it will make for a good laugh afterwards!

Thanks again for everything, it is really refreshing that everyone is so nice. It is not like this in the Magic the Gathering community where I spend most of my life =)

Once again if you have a chance please stop by booth 515, I am looking forward to meeting everyone.
Michelle
Gamingetc

If it makes you feel better Michelle, I KNOW you'll fare better than our Wizard did in 2003. He set a record that I think still stands by dying in Room #2. The TD Staff felt so badly for him that they gave him one of the TD T-Shirts for free as compensation. =)

Mike

As with D&D, the Wizard is powerful, yet fragile. Get some good AC items, and make sure you stay healed up, and you should be fine.

Also, not a lot of people know about this (especially first-timers), but one character can shield another character. So, a Fighter-type character could protect the Wizard or Cleric, if needed. The Fighter may have to give up his/her attacks to do that (?), but it's still an option if you find yourself in dire straits. The Fighter just needs to tell the DM that he/she is shielding the other character.

And, as we found out after we fought the Beholder last year, you can use columns and other obstacles for cover. Great tactic if you are using missile weapons or long-range spells.

Ya, I read that in the player guide. It seemed to me that there wasn't really much penalty except twice the chance of being attacked. I would like some clarification on that, seeing as I'm the barbarian in my runs, I will probably need to do this.

The big "penalty" is that pretty much neither character can do anything except shield/be shielded.
Neither can attack that round - it is purely defensive in nature.

Oops... my bad.
Thanks for correcting me below, Dave.

Sorry, Guys I just want to clarify.

From the Player's guide:

Shielding has its negative side however, as person declaring they are shielding will suffer a -2 point penalty on their attacks due to their divided attention.

So the person doing the shielding has -2 to attacks and does become the target when the monster trys to attack the person being shielded.

Dave

And to clarify further...

Does the shielded person get to attack at all? With missile weapons or spells only?
I think the only action a shielded person can take is to drink a healing potion or something similar.

It was bad. I still can't believe that your Cleric refused to heal him.
