TOPIC: UR for the rest of us:)

UR for the rest of us:) 16 years 2 months ago #1

Hi All,

One improvement I would like to revolves around those of us who can't for whatever reason purchase enough tokens at one time to get a random UR.

My proposal is to allow a person to trade in a set # of rares for a random UR say 20 or 25. Cost structure would be about the same but would allow people to save their excess rares over time to get a Random UR.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Last year, there was a proposal to have just that sort of trade-in. 25 commons for an uncommon, 15(?) uncommons for a rare, and 25 rares for an Ultra-Rare. Unfortunately, it was pointed out that the people who had lots of URs already would also have lots & lots & lots of rares, and would dominate any such trade-in. Possibly to the point that a casual trader saving up their rares wouldn't even get a chance to trade up, because the URs would be gone before they even got in line (Some of us are a little, er, obsessive about our token habit).

The cool thing, tho, is that if you have 25 rares which you could trade for an UR, you stand pretty good odds of finding someone who would trade you an UR for your pile of reds. Not guaranteed, but most URs go for 10 - 20 rares (depending on which rares, of course).

Raven, I agree that the hardcore collectors could possibly dominate the rare to ultra rare trade in. I experienced issues trying to get combo tokens in the past, when I got there to trade in my components all that was left were the combos that were less desirable. Some of the vendors at GenCon stamp your entry badge so that you only get the free give away once per person. TD could do something similar with the trade in to ensure that those of us that don't get to the token trade up or combo trade in immediately with a chance to acquire some of the tokens. just a thought.

One idea would be to have the trade in table inside the Marshalling area, with a limit one per player. Would limit the # of potential trades but also allow the hardcore players that play multiple times, multiple trades. Or you could use a data base similar to the xp one to manage the # of trades etc. Many many ways to try and make it fair to everyone:)

Thanks
Again

On a side note who would be interested in a UR trade (from you) for a fist full of rares from me:) if its at all possible please msg me with what rares you would consider and how many, and we can take it from there

UR's I would like to have for my Monk:)
Horn of PLenty
Gloves of Dex
Girdle of Giant str

After that UR weaps or Armor

At this point something that is purple would be good:)
Yes I have token envy:):):):)

but you can get people to trade in for you, thus there is the same problem with just a tad more difficulty involved.

the other thing to remember - trade ins do not equal profits for TD. by making URs able to be traded for - people decrease buying tokens at certain levels. yes indeed it gives REDS a tad more value...but what does it do to the PURPS?

you would essentially be rewarding those few who have ooodles of REDS going back to day one of tokens - and making it harder for those who have not.

try to imagine Wizards doing a trade in program for CCG cards...or those mini-figs that have a rarity...it sort of defeats the purpose of having rarity and it takes much of the steam out of having a "collectible" game/item.

i discourage the trade in program, hopefully it never happens.

NOW BRING ON THE PYP or any other strategic selling ploy! There is nothing wrong with a carrot to drive sales and help TD keep funding improvements AND bringing TD back each year!
I'm not sure who originally floated the idea of a token trade in but it could easily be modified to make it worth while for TD. Would I trade in 25 reds and $5 for a UR? Yep. Does $5 + 25 reds make it worth TD's effort... ???? Dunno but Jeff could reuse the reds as treasure and have to create less tokens and the $5 would offset and possibly create income for the UR token.

But does that still take some challenge out of getting the UR in the first place...yes I think so.

I think the trade in thing started long long ago as a way to unload commons which were starting to really add up in the Tokenaholics collections.

You know the GP trade in - for Reserve Bars - now that was a nice winning way for TD to get GP tokens (which make good treasure) and it takes nothing away from the rarity of ANY tokens - as the Reserve Bars were created just for trade in/up purposes.

IF TD did something like a special run of UR type items - like maybe one longsword, one mace, one shield, one armor and have them be ALTERNATIVE ART tokens - have the same UR bonus but make them have the same color font as the Reserve Bars (blue is it?) - that might keep the UR set tokens special AND give people something to trade in for that is better than the top RED.

*You heard this idea here first*

Thoughts?

personally I'm torn in this one. I too am a massively purp poor player. ( I have one, which was a gift.) so I can see the difficulty in aquiring one. Particularly since player new to purps will want the most useable ones (class weapons and armor...and the HoP).

at the same time... I can see Gary's point. #1 TD is a business... and to stay alive it needs to make money. Token sales are a large part of that. You can't de-value a token without looking at the consequences. there are folks out there with One of a Kind tokens... Absolutely unique ones. How would they feel if that unique token was added to a print run? the purps are a similar but different situation. look at all the players who have gotten them... through Token sales, or gifts, or even buying them off of e-bay. if you make them easier to get, their value goes down, and those folks will not try as hard to get them in the future.

I would be thrilled to get a purp.... but less so if it were an easier task.

Hence - I think we can do a trade in program - but make the items given in trade totally unique.

I'm thinking now, even make them different in bonus than the UR stock.

OR make TONS of the trade it item(s) so everyone can get one and make it an on-going thing like the Reserve Bars.

Maybe Masterwork blades and shields and stuff? They can be +1 magical and +1 Masterwork - but against some monsters they only get +1 to hit and damage vs the full +2. (I know that is a big rule reliance thing...but it is the best I got at the moment.)

G

Or, do what I've suggested before, and do the Rare/Uncommon/Common tokens (or maybe just the Rares) for this year (or make it even cooler and do it for last year's tokens) and do a unique print run - maybe use a colored background on the label, or do a different color token (copper instead of gold/platinum?) - and do a very limited print run of maybe just 2-5 of each, and you could let people trade in tokens for those (maybe 25 Rares for a Rare, 50 Uncommons for an Uncommon, and 100 Commons for a Common).

Collectors would be getting very cool and unique collectibles for the excess tokens they don't want, True Dungeon would be getting a LOT of excess tokens off the street (that they could turn around and use for treasure or some other purpose), and it wouldn't be diluting the pool of PURPs. The tokens would have quite a bit of trade value also - I'll bet there are at least one or two people that would try to put together a set. Win - Win! =)

Mike

Hey,

Another option to limit trades in a way would be to make the trade in level related. For example of those people who have reached Lvl 3 or even 4 have the option to trade in rares for a UR.

Kinda of a level related bonus for playing year after year and you could even hole punch their badge or keep a data base and only allow 1 trade per person.

Lets say you set it to Level 4, you can go through the list and see how many people are lvl 4 or higher atm and see who may make a possible lvl 4 depending on XP in this years arc. This would give Jeff an idea on how many possible trades he could be looking at, This would also provide a LVL bonus that I think everyone is looking for.

Make sense? or am I rambling:):):)

Thanks
