TOPIC: 2008 Tokens -- PLEASE PROOF!

Re: 2008 Tokens -- PLEASE PROOF! 16 years 4 months ago #13
Looks like a very nice themed set - I think it will go a long way in setting the mood in the adventure!

Here's a set of questions and compliments:

Questions:

1) Why both a 50 foot rope and a 50 foot twine? From a DM perspective, unless the puzzle involves threading needles, anything the twine can do, the rope can do better, but many things the rope can do, the twine cannot, ergo, why the twine?

4) My understanding is that the UR Hourglass is consumable. Is that correct? If so, you might want to put that on the token. Looking at it right now, it looks like a perm. If it is indeed a perm, disregard, and thank you for not making consumable UR's!

Regarding the twine....no comment. =D

I will add "and then destroyed" at the end of the UR Hourglass to make it 100% clear.

Any thoughts on the Potion of Heroism? Cool...lame...bleh? I thought it would be cool to offer a way for peole to shake things up a bit and play a higher level character. Making it a UR consumable should keep it from being too crazy, but I am worried that no one will use it!

I guess that depends on what the higher level does. If it's only a couple hit points and/or a small save bonus, it's not worth it. If it's higher starting AC, bonuses to Hit and Damage, as well as HP and saves... then it might happen a time or two. The main thing is that the bonus has to be very tempting, and not replicable with other tokens, if you want this one to get used. Most people who get one will be those who get purples in general - people who don't really need any help.

Team Token, for example, did our first Hardcore Combat run last year without taking a single point of damage. Unless there is a new Nightmare Difficulty mode (which would rock!), there's no temptation to burn a collectible just to say you did it. The few newbies who get one, who aren't immediately pounced on by collectors who will make it exceedingly worth their while to trade the Potion of Heroism away, probably would be the folks who use it.

If the token gives a benefit that can not be had anywhere else, or through use of other tokens, and that benefit is of clear use in the dungeon run ahead... then you'll see them getting burned by big and small alike.
I actually liked the original pics for the orcish broadsword for the weapon, I was thinking you might call it something different is all. like orcish Kopesh, or orcish skinsaw, or orcish Flayer.

I really like the UR broadsword pic, PLEASE dont change that.

I think I will call the first two (Uncommon and Rare) broadswords “Orcish Sickle” and go with the original pics -- and leave the UR Broadsword as is. What do you think?

Well J according to a brief description in another thread, the extra level grants spells that are not available right now both scroll and memorized.

If the ruling on the Belt of Retrieval is only Potions (so it requires Potion in the Name or on the Token) then should Monks Mead and Orcish Double Stout have Potion on them like 2007's dwarven drinks?

It's kind of hard to see, but the symbol of Pelor as all Greyhawk fans know, is a Sun.

Hi Jeff, great looking tokens! You've outdone yourselves!

A few questions/comments:
1. As per octoberblu3's post, what classes can use the Orcish Warhammer? Also, can it be thrown?
2. Bracer of the Quivering Palm- can this item be used as part of a pair? 2 Potential deathblows per round seems a bit much. Consider limiting it to 1 attack per round. The Monk would need time to concentrate and attune their attack to disrupt a creature's anatomy.
3. Minotaur Hide Armor- is this from an actual Minotaur? Instead of a +6 AC, give the wearer the ability to inflict x2 damage (as if they had charged). Limit this ability to 1 or 2 uses per adventure.

Token Note:
Oil of Ghost Touch- this year, we had several tokens that only had a dark-blue color on the tube. The light-blue effect was not present on all the tokens of Ghost Touch. Did anyone else have these?

All in all, no problems with how the tokens look.

MW Thieves' Tools - Change "re-try" to "retry" (correct, and matches Potion - Owl's Wisdom)

Classes for the orcish warhammer needed

Salve of Stoneskin - would it be clearer for it to say "one room only" or "one use only?"

Sling Bullet of Impact - the slash is unnecessary

Looking great!

Brian
Wow, I go away for a week and look what happens! *sigh* Life can be a little overwhelming at times but I see a new list of tokens. Here are my thoughts.

First, love the graphics. Very well done. None strike me as needing to be fixed or changed. Like the new Broadsword pic.

Second, Jeff while I admire your desire to incorporate the ideas of as many people as possible, I think everyone will agree that getting the best token mix is more important. I don't think anyone wants the overall quality of the tokens to go down for the sake of inclusion. Others might disagree but its something to keep in mind.

Commons
I'd like to see more difference between the Orcish Rations and the Potion CMWs. I like the concept but as is, the Rations are a weaker version of the Potion. Perhaps heals 1 hp and +1 to fear saves, -2 to hit. Or heals 2 points with same penalty.

Potion of Frost Resistance maybe a blue bottle?

Perhaps a wooden shield picture for the small shield? I think Druid/Metal-looking conflict had been mentioned previously.

Vial of Ink - If this is going to be included, how about a quill with it?

General Suggestion: Some tokens need to be slid. Scroll: Scortching Ray, Tanglefoot Bag, etc. Others don't, Scroll: Burning Hands, Scroll: Shocking Grasp, Scroll: Chain Lightning, etc. Rather than having text like "Must hit AC-15" and "requires a 'to-hit' slide", how about a Target (e.g. cross hairs) with either the number needed to be slid inside or just the letters 'AC' which means you must hit as normal. You could do saves in much the same way. Have a diamond/square with the number. This would free up room and make things more consistent across tokens.

Uncommons
Bracers of Deflection - Do most Ray attacks check against AC? I thought most were saves, Will, Fort, etc. I am thinking like the Beholder last year. Maybe make this +4 AC vs. Missiles only.

Ring of Bear Strength - Picture looks like a Lion? Maybe name it Ring of Lion Strength or new Bear Ring pic?

Rares
There is substantial power creep with the Great Club. It has an average damage of 7, compared to the 6.5 with the +1 Great Sword and Great Axe. How about 11,11,10,10,8,6,4,3,2,2 for an average of 6.7? Or even closer to 6.5-6.6 range. As is, the Great Club basically pushes the Great Sword and Great Axe into extinction.

Gauntlets of Ogre Power - Now might be a good time to put a non-metalic picture on the token? I know this was an issue last year and compatibility with the Druid.

Cloak of Curses - What is the effect of being blinded and how long does it last? I like it as a concept but the amount of potential confusion from this item worries me.

Belt of Retrieval - I'm not crazy about this item but you guys seem to like it so what do I know. =) I think you can replace "during each combat" and just make it "each room" to simplify its function.

Boots of Springing - Um... WOW! These are INCREDIBLY powerful! Trap damage to me was the one weakness that players with Monster ACs had and with this, that hole is now plugged. To put this in perspective, the Ring of Evasion is an UR that only applied to Reflex saves, was only usable once per room, and you had to role to get the 1/2 damage benefit.

Further, this goes in the Boots slot so at worst a Rogue loses Elvenkind, others lose Free Action, not major losses.

There is also likely to be confusion about exactly WHICH traps this protects you from. Would, for example, you be able to take 1/2 damage from stepping on a wrong square? (MOON puzzle, Chess Board). And would these allow a player to jump over large pits?

If anything, I would make the Boots of Springing into a UR.

Salve of Shadowvein - This is confusing to me. Does this mean that a person is immue to all damage from Undead? The use of "touch attack" is ambiguous and to me could include a scrape, bite, slash.

Ultra Rares
I like the Broadsword of LS modification. The 6 HPs is more straightforward and also ties into the Wand of LS.

+2 Great Club of Bashing has significant power creep. With the exception of the +2 Holy Greatsword (in the hands of a Paladin), this is THE best 2-handed weapon in the game for anyone ... and thats without the Barbarian bonus. Damage wheel for the +1 Club would soften things a little.

Mace of Disruption - Is this only usable by Clerics and Paladins? Not Fighters? Hmm...

Dragonscale Helm - Druids?

Thats all I have for now. Time to dream up some URs.

-Douglas
