Token Phobia 16 years 9 months ago #1

My friends and I were discussing True Dungeon and the nature of one-shot tokens. Some feel that the consumed tokens should be retained instead of being surrendered to the DM. I can sympathize as I've paid cash for them and would like to hold onto them afterwards. On the other hand, [DM Evasion skill +8 Ranks] items that only have 1 use are fairly common and probably would be available in next year's tokens.

One person even suggested that DMs could drill a hole in the token (much like what they do with old casino dice), this way they use the token but can still have it as part of their collection. The obvious problem with that, can you imagine the DMs lurking in their rooms, each armed with a DeWalt drill? Talk about intimidating!

Also, what happens to all the tokens that are removed from play? Do they find their way to an old token's home or are they re-cycled into play at a future date?

That would make healing obsolete since you only need one scroll or potion and you could just keep drinking it.

I think in part, he's suggesting the token be marked so that it can only be used once, but that you can still keep the marked token for your collection. For lots of stuff, like a 2007 1 pt cure light wounds, that seems pretty unnecessary, but if it's a rare 2003 consumable, it would be neat to still have it in your collection (although there's no way I'd ever use a 2003 consumable anyway).

If the suggestion is to retain the consumable to use again during that adventure or a later one, then it does seem like a bad idea, as you could have a small pool of potions and scrolls and use them forever.

That is the reason why all my wands of lightning is taken away from me after they tick the last box. There is the possibility of people "cheating" the system and trying to rub out the old tick marks.

From what I hear, Jeff and company have a big bonfire of the old wood tokens. Can I assume the new chip tokens can't be bonfired or else they will get fined for releasing hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere. Oh wait, those are the funky smelling gamers :D

Fully used tokens should be returned to the owners...it is in our DM rule book.

If they get scrubbed clean somehow and re-used - well then, to the cheaters go the spoils!

That would take care of things like Wands with charges - but not single use consumables, which I think he was partially referring to. Good to know the rule about the fully used tokens being returned though =D

Maybe the plan is to sharpie a big ole X on them...

Works for me. Although I prefer to have the single use consumables recycle back as treasure in the dungeon.

Well I'm gonna crush your hopes and dreams here... sorry.

Gary, the rule for returning a used up token (i.e., wand) was removed from the final DM guide. You had the benefit of seeing earlier drafts, but I was told it was an error. (Yet another example of the difficulties of consistency even among those of us working on it!) Historically we were suppose to mark the last box and then keep them. While I don't necessarily agree with it, that is the current ruling.

As for the original posting, we haven't seen it as too much of an issue for the commons, because they are just that. But we have seen some hesitancy of using more powerful consumables.

I'll look at it this way because I hold a fully used wand in my collection...

Consistency is what is needed - the rule has gone both ways in the past. IF DMs are being trained to mark last box and keep - bully!

No one answered another question asked here. If the old tokens were burned then what happens to the new PLASTIC tokens?
