TOPIC: Flying with tokens

Flying with tokens 4 years 7 months ago #1

PAX West will be the first time I'll be traveling by plane for TD. How are people's experiences taking tokens on the plane?

Check nothing you can't live without. Not just TD tokens, but in general.

Leave a LOT of extra time to get through security with your carry on. Like, 30 min more than you usually would give yourself.

I can write up something longer, but...

1) tokens orderly stacked seem to go through security with less chance of your bags being checked.

10 boosters worth of tokens tossed in a suitcase... Checked. 10x that stacked neatly in my battlefoam 432... No issue.

2) tsa pre check does not seem complain about tokens. See point one for order though

3) have a packing solution.

4). The under the seat spaces are not all the same. The most room is under the middle seat, then window, then aisle

Which airline and how do you know this?

Southwest, though i believe it varies by plane.

The battlefoam privateer press bag will only fit under the middle seat. The 432 will fit under all the seats, but it will only fit in one direction under the aisle seat, and it's very Tight the wide way in the window seat

Pack your tokens in a separate bag that will fit inside your main bag.

Then when you get to the x-ray, take the token bag and run it through on its own.

If you get stopped, it will be more convenient to have them search just your tokens rather than move all of your stuff around.

Attached is a picture of the battlefoam 432 under the aisle seat on southwest the narrow way.

I may have pictures under a middle seat on a different flight (I travel to conventions twice a year, packing minis games in addition to tokens)

I use Dansco binders. Has anyone had experience with those?

I generally put my tokens in the overhead bin.

I fly with one all the time. I always have it open in a separate bin as it goes through the X-ray. Usually no problem but sometimes curiosity.

Good to know as i have to pack once i acquire a bag. I'm used to and had planned on stuffing bunch of stuff in my personal item as I've seen here and been reminded to leave nothing of value in checked bag. That said I've got stuff like TD pins, card holders with magnets and other stuff scattered in the bag. I take it be prepared to completely repack once i'm through TSA?

My tokens are the relative easy part, I've got a ziplock bag with a 10 coin wallets in that.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

The more detailed post I promised earlier.

When I fly to a convention, in particular Gen Con, I am typically packing the following:

My backup builds for Druid, Paladin, and Fighter
Some random tokens for the rest of the Group
Space to return with about 200 pulls from treasure + additional tokens
X-Wing Miniatures (both imperial and Rebel fleets)
Battletech Miniatures (24 Mechs)
Infinity Miniatures (~20 miniatures)

All of this goes into a Battlefoam 432 - I use this as my personal carry on and it goes under the seat in front of me. Its slightly bigger than I like under the seat, but its the best solution I've found to carry this much stuff.

My actual Cleric build, along with all of the Party's TEs go in an OPTIMA token binder I got from Trent, and this goes in my roller suitcase with my clothes and that goes in the overhead:

www.trenttokens.com/collections/trent-tokens-binders/products/token-binder-optima-f-ringbinder

TSA didn't complain with the tokens neatly arranged in the binder in my suitcase, or neatly stacked in the battlefoam bag - your mileage may vary.

If you don't need to take that much stuff, I recommend bringing a smaller bag with your tokens and keeping it under the seat in front of you. I wouldn't mix it in my roller bag, and I wouldn't risk checking it, unless I was running builds of rare and under tokens.
