In spite of how they're flagged in the TDb, I would argue that a holy symbol is effectively a slotted item. You can only use one per adventure and they can't be swapped. How is that different from other, officially slotted items?

I suppose because you can wait till you see what is in the dungeon before you break out the holy symbol of your choice?

But that's a pretty minor difference.

It should probably just be slotted to:

a. Minimize confusion.
b. Allow for future effects that allow you to use multiples?

If you mean what I think you mean: no, you can't. Like figurines, you "equip" your holy symbol before you enter the dungeon. You cannot wait to make up your mind until after you enter.

If you mean you can swap it between dungeons... well, you can swap every token between dungeons.

What - really?

Then it really is just slotted - like - I can't think of any distinction between this and a slotted token?

Doesn't slotted just mean: "You can only equip up to SLOT_LIMIT of these, you must make your selection in the coaching room.?"

We are in violent agreement :)

And that’s why I lobbied against a Bliss Holy Symbol last year, and would have lobbied against this year’s Haven if I’d noticed it - they neuter the UR and rare Holy Symbols

So wait, I can’t decide on the holy symbol to use after my bard lores a creature? I really thought I could bring 30 holy stmbols and use the best one for my adventure, it’s like a bard instrument, or a wand selection. The right wand or instrument, or holy symbol for the task at hand.

The premise is that you choose the God you follow long before any of those other choices.

I am a cleric, what does my god have anything to do with my holy symbol? If I channel her power through this one or that, and it comes out a bit differently it doesn’t change my relationship to her. In fact if I leave my holy symbol in its case, she still lets me call on her without it.

She never changes, and is willing to acknowledge my call as I am her servant, through whatever radio, sms, phone, wireless, hello moto, can you hear me now that I choose to use.

Is there really a rule that says I cannot choose a holy symbol after the coaches room?

Edit
“Special holy symbols can enhance or alter a cleric’s turn undead ability. A cleric player may only bring one holy symbol token with them on their adventure.”

That is.... a thing, and the last time I play a cleric

Commander's gives +2 to a subset of undead, so it's the least useful.
Greater Holy Symbol and Holy Symbol of Pelor are essentially the same (+2 to turning)
Greater Holy Symbol of Pelor doubles turn damage, which is much more than +2, so is strictly better than those three.
Then there's Haven.
Haven lets you turn the season's thematic enemies (Evil Outsiders and Aberrations) as well as undead. We got the same sort of power in the last two years, but the Fae equivalent was gloves, and for the Bliss it was a charm.

Before this year, the choice was easy: use the best symbol you have.

So functionally, this year clerics have to choose: if we try to get bonus damage against undead (and many years there aren't any), we might not be able to use one of our core abilities at all.

I'll pay more attention to the uncommons next year.

Still waiting on my holy symbol of mask then XD

In all seriousness I was operating under the impression you could carry as many holy symbols as you wanted due to them being slotless.

Something's wrong when an uncommon is BIS over a UR. Maybe TPTB thought that double-turning damage against Giants was overpowered last year.

Just one more thing

@Picc - this is the first year it matters

But, as usual, we've gone far off the original topic.
