If you're someone (like me), who doesn't pull a high frequency of random ultra rares, it feels pretty special when you get one. But then sometimes you get an Ultra Rare, like a Hat of Healing and go "who's going to use this?". Over the past few year, the answer has been no one. I'd like to think of it as tradable for another UR, but have not found that to be the case. What do others do in this example?

Sure, I could trade it for more usable rares, but its an UR, it was much more difficult to get, I'd like to think it's worth something. I have a Ring of Wizardry that falls into this same category. My wizard wears a Supreme Ring of Elemental Command and Ring of Riches. Wizardy is never going to get used.

I guess ideally I'd like to see some type of transmutable token that will accept any UR as an ingredient. I think it would be a great way to "trade up" and not make it feel like the luck of pulling the UR in the first place was a waste of time.

Any thoughts?

Trade them to new players for gold? You might not get much, but it might be better than them gathering dust and taking up storage space. Your useless might be useful to a gear poor newbie.

A UR based golden fleece? With how they've devalued over time a 3-item good wouldn't be outrageous

Is the Ring of Wizardry really that bad? Looks bad ass to me. I guess when there are so many great rings out there these days, even a good ring doesn't see much action.

I agree with what you're saying though. It'd be nice to have some other option than just selling them for $50.

No need to make it complicated though. Some simple guideline, such as: "Any 3 ultra rares can be used in place of a Golden Fleece" or something along those lines.

Some URs are misunderstood and, like all of us, just want to be loved. Until we can find them their forever-home you can send them to the Island of Misfit URs, which by the strangest of coincidences happens to have the same mailing address as me. What are the odds of that?

For only a dollar we can provide a home to 20 of these lovable little scamps in a warm, clean binder where they can make friends and spend their days reminiscing about the days when regaining 40 HP was worth crushing an ultra-rare. Won't you help!?!?!

No? Ok. It was worth a try...

As someone that has acquired some of the less Usable UR's I think they are prefect for newer players. My fighters and barbarian don't have the best UR weapon but they do have a UR weapon. Whomever I bought it from didn't get it high market value of a few years ago but they got more for it than they would have if that haven't sold it to me.

So I say sell them what else are they going to do for you.

I too would equip a Ring of Wizardy for my wizards if I had one (still beats most rare rings out there).

If you have no use for the ring, you can help a little elf here by donating to his cause...

  • I don't care how much you spent on tokens.

I think you're looking for an external solution to a self-created problem. You're focusing on the "mathematical" values of tokens over their practical values.

Rarity systems (common, rare, etc.) never manage perfect equivalences between all items of the same rarity. Sometimes you have to "trade down" for a less valuable-but-more-practical item, and/or negotiate to trade one items for multiple items.

Trading is part of the (meta)game, and "trading outside the math" is part of how people win the metagame.

I think the point of "de-valued" ultra-rares is that you start dropping the value until you get a seller. I can't imagine you wouldn't get $50 for the Ring of Wizardy. Don't melt it down, sell/trade it to a lower-level player for its actual value.

A trickle-down token economy benefits everyone.

Honestly I use them. I equip an entire party (mostly in reds) and without budgetary help from most of them the less then optimal URs are a great fit for our group. Most of my friends and family like the more flavorful URs and dont care so much if they are best in slot since we don't play nightmare when were running together. My paladin friend for example loves his +2 holy great sword and boots of skipping.

LOL I equip an entire party too. Most of them have no idea the value of any of the tokens beyond a few of the higher end ones (ie the ones they don't get to touch). They wouldn't care or know if I equipped them in commons. Still I like knowing that I dress them better than average.
