Do we need to make the relics class specific?

No, but we don't have to make them not specific, either.

Insightful as always. How expensive (gold/tokens) are these relics going to be? Any guesses?

Are we going to have to separate you two?

Well, my guess is an Argonite or two, a Golden Fleece or two, somewhere between 1000-5000 gp, possibly a couple of rares, maybe a current UR in trade for it.

For Example:

Merlin's Magic Stick +2
Wizards no longer lose spells when cast. Cannot gain levels from other tokens. damage wheel 3, 3, 4, 5, 8, 8

trade in: Argonite, Golden Fleece, 3 Darkwood Planks, +2 Staff of Power, 3000 gp.

*Disclaimer: I have no actual knowledge of any relics coming out. This is just an example that came to mind. Wizards can drool anyway.

What insight? This is guessing and speculation. Jeff hasn't said much about relics, except that they will be taking the place of artifacts, and will be somewhere in between artifact and UR in power. Distribution, soul-bonding, what exactly they are, none of that has been revealed to us yet. They could be class specific, or not. Speculate, guess, suggest. Whet Jeff's imagination with ideas both wondrous and silly.

If they go to auction, like most people are thinking, then there is no way to know how much they will go for, it will depend on what people are willing to pay. If they become super-combo items, darkangel866 is probably on the right track.

I hope they don't go to auction. My work schedule does not allow me to attend Gen-Con for all 4 days every year, so I cannot always attend the auction.

If they do go to auction, I will be looking for a proxy bidder. Whatever happens with them, you can be sure that there will be a gold piece price, either with the auction, or the combo.

Jeff Martin wrote: Let me clarify my idea a little more for 2012-2015.

This new group of powerful magic items would be called "Relics" so that they would be different than the "Artifacts". They would be less powerful and only affect one player.

I am thinking of something like a "+2 Vorpal Sword" that kills any "critical-able" monster if the player slides a natural "20" or "+3 Plate Armor" or a "Staff of the Magi" that allows unlimited spell use of 0-2nd level spells.

We can talk more about this after Gen Con, but I wanted to give you all a preview of what I had in mind. Again, you all would help in balancing them all out.

Finally, one other idea I had was to make these Relics really just super-Combo items where we would print up a bunch of each of them, and list a GP and Trade item price for each. Three would be made available each year (and only one year). They would be pretty expensive, but you could get multiple ones if you wish. Again, the power will be less than the Artifacts -- more like a step-up from URs. It would be a nice thank you for all the big token collectors.

We can figure all this out in Sept., but those are my thoughts anyway.

Thanks.

Well there's where I got Merlin's Magic Stick from. And an idea that they would be trade in items. . .

i hope they do go to auction (and that anyone that wants to can find a proxy bidder), and not be super-combos. as a super-combo, they wont be that special any more (ie. every long-time player will have the relics for their preferred class)..."and when everyone's super, no one will be!"

I hope that they are super-combo items, and aren't limited to the auctions. If the goal of the items is to pull as much GP and Trade Item Tokens out of circulation as possible while rewarding the big Token Buyers, why limit it to those that attend the auctions? If the cost for them is high enough (for example 10,000 GP and one or more of each Trade Item Token) that will limit the amount of them that will be traded for. I see mothing wrong with everyone that has enough GP and Trade Items being able to obtain one or more of the items - and it will encourage everyone to buy more tokens the next year to have the ingredients to trade for the next year's Relic Tokens.

I think that auctioning htem is problematic. If the recipe includes more than just GP, that makes an auction very complicated. Plus, since there aren't that many bidders at the auctions, I think that auctioning them off would result in far less GP and Trade Items removed from circulation than if they were treated as super-combo items.

Also, if they were treated like the Trade Item Combo Tokens (which they should be), they could be traded for at any time in the year, and that means that they could be designed to be relevant to that year's Dungeon and could be obtained before the Dungeon and used in the Dungeon. If they were auctioned off they would be won after the Dungeons were all over for the year and couldn't be used in that year's Dungeons.

I don't really care if it is combo/auction or somewhere in between. I'm really stoked about the design part. As a player who only purchases about $500 in tokens I don't think they will be in my "ability to acquire" range regardless.

As for separating Xavon and myself I think we are just having some fun at each others expense. No hard feelings on my side at least.
