TOPIC: Disney Style NPC Token Trading

Disney Style NPC Token Trading 13 years 7 months ago #1

I was thinking of the way Disney encourages Pin buying and trading, by having many employees have pin collections with them, and they have to trade like rarities of pins with anyone that wants to trade. My nieces and nephews had a great time buying pins and then trading them with various Disney employees.

I wonder if something like that could work for True Dungeon tokens. Maybe if you limited it to one token trade per person at a time, some volunteers could be wearing a specially marked Token Sash or something similar, and people could trade their tokens for tokens from the NPC. It works really well at Disney. It would likely mainly draw in newer players, since the sash wouldn't have anything incredibly rare on it to attract the token-rich. Maybe it would spark the token buying and trading joy in some new players.

Most of the pins on the cast member sashes are exclusive pins that only cast members get. The reason why it works at Disney is because the cast members are told to only trade with children (although there are some who don't follow that rule.)

So yeah.... those pins would be incredibly rare if you used the model Disney uses.

That wasn't our experience. We were told that they had to trade with anyone, and we saw many adults trading with them as well as children. And most of the pins they had were regular pins (many traded to them), although there were some exclusive pins also.

As an FYI, here are the Disney Pin Trading rules, courtesy Google search :-)

Disney Pin Trading Etiquette
•Have Fun! Disney Pin Trading can be a great way to interact withand meet Cast Members and other Guests.
•The main criteria to judge whether a pin is tradable or not is that it must be a metal pin that represents a Disney Event, Location, Character or Icon. Some pins from our Operating Participants are also tradable, but must represent the Operating Participant in a way that has aspecific Disneyland®Resort or Walt Disney World®Resort affiliation.
•Pins should in good, undamaged condition.
•Trade one pin at a time, hand to hand, with the backs attached.
•Guests may trade a maximum of two pins with each Cast Member.
•Guests may trade only one pin of the same style with a Cast Member.
•When trading with Cast Members, Guests should offer a pin that is not already displayed on the Cast Member's lanyard.
•Please refrain from touching another person's pins or lanyard. If you need a closer look, ask the person wearing the lanyard if they can bring it into clearer view for you.
•Disney name pins may not be traded with Cast Members.
•Monies or gifts may not be exchanged or used in trade for a pin.
•In addition to the 12 pins on Cast lanyards, some Cast Members may wear a "Showcase" pin. These "Showcase" pins are for demonstrations to our Guests and are not available for trade.

Here is some further info from Disney:

About Disney Pin Trading

Official Disney pin trading can be a great way to meet and interact with Cast Members and Guests from around the world. Getting started in Disney pin collecting is as simple as procuring a pin you like.

Disney pin trading begins when you meet a Disney Cast Member or Guest wearing a pin trading lanyard—and then trade your pin for one of theirs. Disney Cast Members at Disney's Pin Traders can show you the tools of the trade to keep you going.

Displaying your pins is a quick way to show others who your treasured Disney character is. Imagine the conversations that'll start when you run into someone else who shares your taste in characters!

Every Disney pin is special and Disney pin collecting is a great way to relive memories at a favorite Disney attraction and event—and when you pin trade you become part of the great Disney tradition of storytelling.
Well, I can only speak to company policy, being a part of their legal department.

Really, all of the 'regular' pins were traded to them. The further you are into their day, the more likely you are to get those, but at the beginning of the day it's (supposed to be) the exclusive cast member only pins.

Company policy is that they aren't to trade with adults, and usually if someone is discovered doing that, they can face some pretty harsh disciplinary action.

But enough of an insight into the more sordid parts of the company...

I can see it now...

"Ah, Salaam and good evening to you worthy friend. Please, please, come closer--(Person stands on top of his feet) Too close, a little too close. (Person backs up a bit)

There. Welcome to True Dungeon. Game of mystery, of enchantment...and the finest tokens this side of Indianapolis, on sale today, come on down! Heh, heh.

Look at this! Yes! Combination token and weapon, also purple. Will not lose combats! (slides token on table) Will not! (it falls off the back of the table) It lost! Ooohhh! Look at this! (pulls out a Bone Scroll Case token) I have never seen one of these intact before. This is the famous Bone Scroll Case. Listen. (opens it and he makes the tupperware squeaky sound out of the corner of his mouth) Ah, still good. Wait, don't go!

I can see that you're only interested in the exceptionally rare. I think then, you would be most rewarded to consider...this. (pulls a common token out from his sleeve) Do not be fooled by its common place appearance. Like so many tokens, it is not what color it is, but how it is used that counts. This is no ordinary token! It once changed the course of a young man's life. A young man who, like this token, was more than what he seemed. A Wil Wheaton in the rough. Perhaps you would like to hear the tale? It begins on a dark night, where a dark man waits, with a dark purpose..."
Some of them are only supposed to trade with kids, but most of them can trade with anyone.

WHY ARE SOME CAST MEMBERS WEARING GREEN/TEAL LANYARDS?
Disney Pin Trading is fun for people of all ages. However, kids, ages 3-12, get an extra trading treat. Look for Kids Only lanyards - Disneyland® Resort uses "teal" lanyards and Walt Disney World® Resort uses "green" lanyards. This means that Kids are the only Guests allowed to trade from these special lanyards. Kids can also trade from Cast Members wearing blue lanyards.

eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/page?id=getStarted

The main reason I don't think that this would work for TD is that Disney doesn't really concern itself with "rarities" of pins.

Indeed. I apologize, I was under a mistaken impression. Originally (according to one of my coworkers), they were limited only to trading with children, but over time parents and adults who didn't have children but wanted the limited edition/exclusive pins were complaining about not being able to acquire them.

I apologize for not further researching before speaking. I guess that the only time I was made aware of the pin trading issue was when something went wrong with it.

I have a dream that one day I'll be at disney world, goofy will expose himself to me, and then I can sue Disney for 8.4 million dollars to cover my emotional trauma.

Lol!
Although male cartoon characters are not always played by males. I remember one day back stage the queen of hearts was passing by captain hook and they both had their faces exposed. And captain hook was a woman and queen of hearts was a guy.
