TOPIC: 2010 Dungeon Token Buying Incentive or Disincentive?

2010 Dungeon Token Buying Incentive or Disincentive? 13 years 7 months ago #1

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on whether the 2010 Dungeons were an incentive to buy more tokens, or a disincentive?

As for being an Incentive, it was much harder than previous Dungeons (even Normal mode was harder than past Nightmare & Hardcore Dungeons in my opinion), so it does encourage you to buy more tokens to better combat them.

But - it may also be a Disincentive to buy more tokens, in that it seemed that (except for the Fire Prevention items), tokens didn't really help that much this year. I bought multiple Ultra-Rare Armor tokens to raise my AC to 29 - and monsters still hit me with ease - the Chain Monster rolled a 5 and hit me, in past Dungeons they often needed a 20 to hit. I also bought MANY Ultra-Rare Weapon Tokens and hit/damage enhancing items (like Girdles of Hill Giant Strength, Mithral Gauntlets, etc) so that our group could hit and kill the Monsters easier - and yet this year we pretty much needed to slide 20's to hit. The way the Dungeon was designed, it didn't make too much difference if you had Leather Armor or Ultra-Rare Armor - you still got hit nearly ever time. And, it didn't make much difference if you used a normal Longsword or a +2 Longsword with the Girdle & Mithral Gauntlets - you still needed a 20 to hit. I have a feeling this is the trend of the future.

What are the thoughts on this? Are you encouraged to buy even better tokens to help defeat the monsters, or does it seem like it won't make much difference and isn't really worth it? I'm sure I'll still buy a ton of tokens next year - but it was discouraging to me that all the Tokens I bought our group over the years didn't help us much this year.

Maybe you didn't sell enough on eBay this year so the dungeon wasn't nice to you.

I loved the fact that token heavy players were not the answer to the dungeon. I really hope this continues.

That said.

I hope token sales do not suffer.

That said.

I'd be HAPPY to see secondary market prices drop and people stop paying crazy amounts of money for PURP tokens.

I think buying token kind of takes away from the whole fun of TD. Players going in with the mindset, it's okay if I run out of time, I 'll just use a potion or too.

I will say this, I Dm in first room of Evading Hilt, Everyone used tokens to get back hit points. I guess for sales this is good, what about what TD is about? fun

For many people, the fun is in not dying a half hour in for an event in which you paid $40. DIfferent strokes for different folks.

Personally, I'm just sick of the weight. I want virtual tokens.

virtual tokens are a great idea, how to pull that off?

You know maybe next year (if virtual tokens are birthed yet) limiting the amount of tokens each class can take with them. not buy--just take with them on their runs.

In D&D (yes I know TD is nothing like D&D), but when you equip your characters you have a limited amount of equipment that you can give a given character. If you get into a situation and you don't have a particular item, oh well you just don't have it.

Will you keep buying tokens if the new UR tokens don't improve over the ones you have? Will you keep playing if the dungeons are so easy the monsters drop right away and the puzzles are solvable without concentrations and stress? Power creep and difficulty creep are inseparable lovers.

That being said, my opinion is that the fear of death absolutely must be present in D+D games. For that fear to be manifest, some players have to die. My personal preference is to be challenged to within a hair of death but still survive. I'm not sure dragon breathing to death 90+% of the players was the best marketing and sales strategy, but it wasn't such a bummer that it ruined my experience. I had a great time.

I bought way more tokens this year since the pick your purple wasn't restricted to 2010. Allowed me to get some older purps I wanted. I hope they continue that in 2011.

I'm afraid that logistics is an issue that TD needs to work on before I spend another 2k here on tokens... For our 'Golden Ticket' run, the training and coaching time was skipped, and our party got thrown into the first dungeon room late enough that we all took push damage before we could physically finish the puzzle.

Smoak. The difference in wording between his Ioun stone and ours still annoys me... and again, logistics. Losing the fight with a nearly-perfectly executed strategy because we got stuck in that hallway for more then a minute after the previous horn finished sounding left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I'm sure you could hear Henwy all the way down the hall. >.>

All I know is me and my group will keep running TD for now, but to be honest if the dungeons where like that every year it would suck and we would stop running and go play Nero or something else. I but lots of tokens so the hard battles will be easier on my group, not so the TD staff can be like "Thanks for spending all this money on tokens and runs, by the way your tokens are almost useless now".
I know it was aid it was done to make more people equal but I know many many people who I talked to and who approached me because I had a survivor pin who said they wont play again and that they feel they where ripped off and paid 40's to play in a event they viewed as having no chance of wining in. Now yes I know people will try to argue that but it's not what you think, it comes down to that's what those people felt and its has now made them less likely to run TD and to buy tokens for it.
I was livid when I found out about the Ioun stone, Yeah we do a ton of damage still but only if we can get into one of the small areas 19-20 or for me as A barb with a bard in the group 17-20, thankfully we got real lucky and our fighter with the cestus of sundering slide a 19 followed by a 19 allowing most of the range and melee to hit a lot more often and even then it was down to the minute warning that we won.

I think this would be a good mix and would allow people to know what the year is gonna be like. Or something close to this system
Easy year- 80-90% success rate for normal 70-60% success for nightmare
Medium year- 70-60% success for normal 50-40% chance on nightmare
Hard year- 40-30% success on normal 20% or lower on nightmare. <which this is still A LOT higher then this years success rate>
Having some kinda rating system for the dungeons would allow groups and new people to plan alot better and not feel so bad because they will know right away, O this is a hard year maybe I should just wait.

Ya. I'm really not a happy camper about it. I planned meticulously. Slid like a God (even if I'm tooting my own horn) critting with a cestus R1. I even burned my Ring of the Ram, which is the first time I've ever burned any consumable with charges in my @$^&ing life, much less a woodie one. I did everything I possibly could have short of slipping the DM $100, and to have come that close only to get hosed those wasted minutes not being allowed into the room.....

Feh.

Well, I'm only selling tokens to get money to buy more tokens - so that should make the Dungeon happy. I'm outfitting 9 Character Classes & all 8 Party Members, so I'll keep buying tokens because I've never got all the ones I want for our group. Pretty much everyone has PURP Armor & Weapons and most other items I'd like, but there's always more to get. I'd like 5 more Dougal's Cloaks, more Charms, More Rods Segment 1, more +2 Bracers, etc. I'm sure next year will have at least a couple of PURPs that I want to get the whole group (I'm betting on a +2 Ring of Protection next year - if not +3).

I have a hunch these Dungeons were at least a bit harder than they were intended to be, and I suspect the success rate will be a bit higher next year. (just a guess).
