I think you can do just fine with a set of red colored text (rare) tokens. Check out the True Dungeon handbook. Hang around the True Dungeon event, and see who would sell/trade you some rare tokens to outfit your party. Check out eBay to get the general idea of the value of a rare (most are about $5, weapons tend to be lower than $5, a few rare tokens are $10-$35 . . . just get lower cost items). I bet with less than $40, you can outfit yourself really well with reds. Also there are green text tokens (uncommon) that sell for about $2, so you can outfit yourself for about $16 with those. You can fill in black text tokens likely for free (if you buy some red or green tokens, you can make them part of the deal easy).

If you pull any Dungeon Only tokens . . . you could trade them for the sky ($5-$30).

That is a very good point, you could outfit yourself with just Rares and Uncommons and be nearly as good as the PURP Tokens, for a very reasonable price.
While our group was having fun trying to solve the puzzle, he was talking each room's judge ears off about why there wasn't more treasure. He was in such a foul mood that it dragged our party down and almost ruined it for the rest of us. He ended up storming off muttering under his breath about how he was going to make sure that this kind of adventure was never run again and that whoever wrote it was "fired" Don't get me wrong, I like tokens and a cool token for staying alive is great, but the whole event is the reason for playing. PLAY FOR FUN PEOPLE!!!

I think I remember DMing that run...

And yes, we will do something for old ingredients, I do not know what it is yet, but don't assume they are worthless.

Dave

Is one possibility that in the future we may again face a similar monster, with the same ingredient token for that year, so that the old token would be useful in the year it is repeated? Like - if we ever face a Dragon again, the Dragon Tooth Ingredient Token would come in handy?

Really? I fully expect that we'll see another Dragon (of a different type) in a few years - and I'll bet people will be thrilled about it. I wouldn't mind seeing a monster show up again in a few years - especially if it saves TD money by reusing props.
The fun is in playing the game.

While I agree with the spirit of this, keep in mind that fun is subjective. For some, like yourself, archmage78, the fun is in playing the game, win, lose, or draw. For others, the fun is in trying to collect all the tokens, and finding things to do with those tokens. For some it is solving the puzzles, for others it is pounding on monsters. For some folks, the fun may come more from the auction than the dungeon. Everyone has their own reasons for liking True Dungeon, and what they consider fun will vary accordingly.
The person in your story was undoubtedly a bad sport about things, but it seems the fun he wanted to have was not to be found in his run. He got frustrated, and, unfortunately, the other players and the DMs had to pay the price. However, I think it is to the credit of all the folks who put TD together every year that they are able to create an event that so many people find to be fun, no matter how they define the word.

i suspect we might see another dragon down the road, so the dragon tooth amulet isn't just a one year item. i might be wrong also, in which case, it takes a lot of resources for just one year.

i am more curious as to whether or not the surcoat would work against other creatures that are similiar to dragons; wyverns, drakes, basilisks, wyrms, etc.?

Not counting the title, I see nothing in the description of the Dragon Tooth Amulet that mentions anything about dragons. It reduces combat magic damage, not damage from dragons. (unless the dragon cast a damage-based spell at you) Were you thinking of the Dragonbane Surcoat?

Dragon Tooth Amulet: This wondrous constructed artifact made from the tooth of a conquered dragon will grant the wearer a reduction of half (-50%) to the total damage caused by magic based attacks during combat. This is effective against offensive magic spells like "Fireball", magic items like "Wand of Magic Missile", and monster magical attacks that mimic the first two examples (e.g., the lightning bolt attack from a Storm Giant). This item does NOT stack with any other protection item like a Ring of Fire Resistance versus a "Fireball" spell, nor does it work against non-magical attacks like a dragon's breath, or attacks that do not cause damage (hit point reduction) such as the medusa's gaze.

Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
