TOPIC: What can I bring into the dungeon

What can I bring into the dungeon 19 years 5 months ago #1

Greetings,
I was curious what I could bring into TD.
I understand the no paper, pencils, sharp pointy objects, and additional light sources.
But I am coming from one event and directly to TD. Is there a "bag check?" Or can I just carry my backpack with me?
Second, I was thinking about how hard it would be to find your Scroll of feather falling treasure token in your pocket when you fall into a pit. Is it alright to put them in an ultrapro sleeve page ( they make nices ones for photo-slides that are just the right size ) and put them in the binder for easier finding and use?

Any other special rules that a TD newbie should know about in advance (other than show up 15 minutes early and get ready to have the time of your life)?
Many thanks,
Greyseer (Bard, who hopes to survive TD at GenCon SoCal 2004)

Yep, they have a little area off of the sign-in area to store bags and such, well they did at Indy anyway, should be there for you SoCal con-goers.

Don't see why the binder idea isn't a bad idea, but you may need your hands free during your run-thru and i'm not sure if you'd want to put your binder onto the ground or a prop, where you may lose track of it.

15 minutes isn't really long enough in my opinion to arrive ahead of time, you may want some extra time to meet your group and get to know each other and decide on who's playing what, unless of course you signed up as a group of 7 at pre-reg.

Other than that, have a blast. I know I did my first time this past August.

how's this for an option.... and yes keepin your hands free is a good idea.....use the sleeve pages, but hang them on your neck behind your stat sheet attached to say, a lanyard?

I like the sleeves idea - sounds like a good one.

One of the players that ran through at Indy taped all of their tokens to their shirt, already generally sorted. If they needed one, he just grabbed for the one on the shirt. It seemed to work fairly well.

I was thinking of getting one of those zippered binders from ultra-pro that have a shoulder strap and "wearing it" thru the dungeon. Then as needed unzippering and casting that critical spell.
I really like the Shirt idea, but I would hate to brush against something and get whacked.

I do have a question re: items stacking. Lets say I am a bard and I have a masterwork instrument (I think a tin whistle), which grants +1/+2 (instead of normal +1/+1) and I have a +1 Dagger. Am I now a +2/+3 or is a bard who is performing not allowed to fight?

Thanks in advance for replies.

I like the sleeves idea in that it could represent the storage capacity of a players backpack/sack etc. I don't know that we would ever limit the number of tokens a player could bring, but if we did that would be a good way to do it. With the number of tokens that some players bring they are basically carrying the whole general store on their back.

There really isn't anything you need to bring other than your enthusiasm and maybe a few good friends. Fifteen minutes is bare minimum advance time or you'll be likely to end up being the character no one else wants and you might miss some intro info. Look forward to seeing you in the future.

The only trick with the sleeves I noted above is, while they are the perfect size for the tokens, the tokens themselves do not stay put in the sleeves. So I have had to tape them closed, now they work very well and survive jostling, jingling, and all around movement.

I think its a really good idea to use these as a way to limit what a person can bring into a dungeon. Perhaps give the strong guys 2 sleeves. But its a great way to encourage the classic "mule" scenario.
"Hey Fighter Bob, can you carry these Scrolls for me?" Asks wizard Kay
"Sure." Replies Fighter Bob
Later, a fight is underway, Fighter Bob is engaged in foe X.
"Bob, I need those scrolls." Kay says desperately.
"I am busy right now killing things, please leave a message with the cleric and I will get back to you as soon as possible." Bob says with sarcasm.

But another plus with this model is it prevents Mr. Suitcase (A CCG term meaning someone who can afford every card for a game) from pre-buying up all the tokens he wants and bringing in them in. A good adventurer of course will pack for all contingencies, but realistically there is only so much a person can and should bring into a dungeon.

The sheets should only limit what Gear and Items a PC can bring, since gold is printed in such small denominations and gems are pretty light weigth I would go with letting someone bring as much as they can of that to an adventure. But only one sheet of gear.

Another bonus of using the sheets is a DM can use a wet-erase marker to mark off "use once per adventure items" such as Masterwork Thieves tools.

So I give a hearty, good idea!, to the idea of using sleeves to represent a PCs carrying capacity. Just remember to bring the tape so that those tokens wont become someone elses treasure by falling out.

Correct...bards can't sing and play an instrument while attacking.

So, can you wear a costume in? SHOULD you wear a costume in?

I have a great Rogue costume for the costume show that should add to the atmosphere but I don't want to wear it in TD if I'll "get in trouble".

You are welcome to wear a costume into the Dungeon. Keep in mind that all Gen Con rules still apply (weapons, etc.) and that you will be doing some physical activity in a darkened environment.

I, personally, really enjoy seeing the parties and players go through dressed as their characters. One of the parties for indy had a guy in full armor go through. We also had pirates hanging out... :)

I will definitely be coming in costume. I can't imagine doing something like this without a costume!!!
