I'm asking for some advice. I'm thinking of selling my Magic:TG card collection. Just don't have the time to play, and the last few times I did play, I played sealed deck. I might keep a white weenie deck for old times' sake, but I'll be selling a lot of cards. I just would like some advice from anyone who may have done something similar.

Should I try to sell to a dealer, or just go thru ebay?
Should I try to sell what I have in one big lump, or divide by expansion. I do have some complete sets. (none of the power 9, though)
I started collecting about the time of Revised and The Dark. I stopped buying many cards a few expansions ago.

Any other thoughts?
George would probably be one of the best people to talk to about this. I think he was pretty big into Magic at one point.

Kim

I can tell you that a dealer is going to give you far less than you will get on E-bay, probably 1/4 of worth if your lucky. Honestly I would keep it lumped together as there are some sets that even casual players aren't thrilled about and you could use the better stuff to lure a buyer. The best option is to find someone who is getting into the game casually that is willing to spend some money, but those players are few and far between anymore.

The best approach would probably be to push the set and any unopened boxes if you have some. Ebay is an option, otherwise check around with comic book stores and gaming stores. They may be interested in picking up a whole collection because they have a customer base to sell full sets and single cards to. They may even be able to direct you to players looking to buy a collection. Other than that, do some research and now what the bigger stuff is worth (the sets, etc.) so you know if they are trying to rip you off or not. I was big into Magic for quite a while (Arabian Nights through Homelands-ish) and my brother-in-law owned a comic book store so I know that it does happen when people want to get out. The hardest part is finding someone with the money to do it. Good luck!

Never do through a dealer if you don't have to!!!

I'd break things up a little - any high end (power 9 type) stuff, or Multi-lands etc. and then maybe sell sets together in bulk. Try to get some good $$$ on the top cards and then you can fish for gravey on the large collections and not mind so much if they go a little below value.

Mike Steele should have some good advice too!

post on craigs list, a friend that started playing around the same time and had a comparable collection sold for 40k through craigs list to put a down payment on a house. though the collection was beefy and had lots of early stuff including power 9s.

Craig's List as opposed to ebay? I've never used Craig's List - can forunites attest to its worth?
It's fantastic if you're looking for scammers or trying to reconnect with relatives you never knew you had in Nigeria.

I've known of people who have doen several things thru Craigslist. The biggest problem is that you do not have the guarantee you do thru eBay (well, not that that is perfect either) - there is no feedback, so you know know if the people are going to be honest.
If you are looking for an apartment though - I say thumbs up.
