WELP - the winner in our household for the best season premier goes to......

Battlestar Galactica.

Have to admit - it easily beat out LOST, CSI, CSINY, The Unit...

Pretty good show but I still think they jumped the shark when they landed on the planet and spun us a full year into the future...

I suspect LOST will gain a bunch of ground on BSG - CSI and CSINY are pretty solid - but never seem to spike much over the course of a season...

So kudos to at least one good season premier!

=)

Seeing Tigh with the loss of an eye was quite a shock or realism!

Everything else seemed to be a tad predictible...Kelly getting set free, Tigh's wife sleeping with the enemy, and getting turned against Tigh/insurgency...

I would have been shocked if Baltar had not signed the order and if the raptor was not out there...but it was still a great 2 hours of premier. Hey - that reminds me - not many shows did the double long premier...maybe that would have helped some of them as far as entertainment factor goes...

I didn't care for BSG at all. The series didn't just jump the shark with the end of last season, it went down the toilet with the opener. None of it really made all that much sense if you think about it. If the cylon reconcilliation faction really wanted to persue their agenda they went about it in a stupid way guarenteed to fail and cause bloodshed. On the otherhand, if you're part of the kill them all cylon faction, you can't really understand why their methods are so freaking half-assed. Simply wipe out the entire population with a few nukes. The other cylons might bitch and complain about it, but you can't ressurrect the population so it won't matter.

That being said, the cylons are absolute paragons of logic and good sense when compared to the human arseholes running things. WTH are they thinking? If this was reality, the only thing that a bloody armed insurgency would do is guarentee the annihilationo f the human race. If the toasters were at all rational they would simply set a deadline and if the attacks didn't stop, nuke the planet.

The entire show's premise is just driving me crazy. None of it makes logical sense anymore.

Do you think they are trying to make some form of real life parallel with all those confusing decisions hmm? ;/

Personally - I like the different factions within the Cylon command. I think the factions play off each other really well.

Like any complicated machine - the more parts it has - the more chances for a breakdown.

The difference is one of truly no good paths to be chosen and in BSG where there are easy paths but for inexplicable reasons, no one chooses them.

Right... like the annihilation of the people they are trying to "save".

The cyclons have no experience in governing a body of humans. They have an idealistic way of "saving" mankind which you would expect to be less than perfect and even stupid at times. Through out history, governments have imposed their will on the people to "save" and control them. This is political commentary at its finest, masked in the drapings of a science-fiction series.

Makes sense to me. I think the show is awesome!

Right. I'm sure you could get someone to buy that out there but not many. After all, these are human replicants that are so skilled at mimicing the human condition that it's pretty much impossible to disern them from the real thing. The cylons are in fact so skilled at implanting human-like memories that even the replicants themselves don't realize they're not human and yet we're to believe that they're all of a sudden stupid in understanding the human condition. Pull the other one. It's got bells on it.

Even if we do believe that for some reason the 'save them and live in peace faction' is degeneratively stupid all of a sudden, there should be no reason for the kill them all faction to become so as well. The answer is to just nuke and eliminate the population completely.

General comment about sci-fi (I have never watched BSG -- 'cept the old one). The sci-fi genre is plagued by lazy writers to don't take the time to make sure their universe is at least half-way believeable. It drives me nuts that more care is not taken. Nothing yanks me out of a movie or TV show than a hard to believe plot device.

end of whine

Actually, it seems very plausible.

As a race, the cylons are what, 40 years old? There knowledge of humans is extremely limited and *gasp* they make mistakes. They understand daily life enough to blend in but governing a group of humans requires unique experiences, lessons learned from wars, a body of knowledge passed through history, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.

Clearly the cylons don't have that and how would anyone expect them to.

Agreed.

And I think it is the writing on Battlestar Galactica that has made it so popular (and no I'm not just saying that because a friend of mine is one of them). =)

Oh, and also you should know that the new BSG is nothing like the old one. It is so different that in fact I have heard many people complain that it really should be called something else.
