TOPIC: Idea for a convention site

Idea for a convention site 3 years 10 months ago #1

I had an idea for a convention site that would allow for a ton of social distancing while not being terribly expensive. It even has the benefit of having a combined indoor and outdoor venue (outdoor being safer to avoid transmission).

Minor league baseball teams are renting out their entire stadiums via Air BnB. The field alone is 26,000 sq feet (on average) plus another 5K to 10K in other space in the stadiums.

You could have 500 people there with plenty of distance between the groups. Have all the games be multi-track (where you only interact with the same group of people for the entire con). Use pavillion type tents for each of the tables. Turn on food services and have them deliver to specific tables (everyone would have to get used to hot dogs and coke as your options will be limited.)

The cost for a stadium is only $1,600 per day - a two day con could be run for $3,200 for facilities plus another $3K in equipment rental (tables, tents, etc.). You could seriously run a 2-3 day con for less than $15K in a really interesting venue. Sell 500 tickets at $50 each, that gives you $10K for staff to set up and tear down. Any merch sold is gravy.

The density would be very low (1 person per 500 sq feet).

Downsides: unknown weather
Upsides: you get to use the PA system and it's a freaking baseball stadium!

Apparently the Florida stadium isn't the only one doing this...

The Indian's Stadium is downtown. I thought the goal was to avoid downtown parking expenses.

It isn't like they have games happening this year. It's actually quite a cool stadium. My friends and I make it a point to see if they are playing during GenCon. If they are, we always get tickets for the Sunday game and watch it out on the lawn inside the stadium as a way to wind down from the Con before flying home.
