Keeping to the road your group pushes ever deeper into the weird unfamiliar woods until after several hour travel you spot what must be the gates the gypsy spoke of.

Jutting from the impenetrable woods on both sides of the road,
high stone buttresses loom up gray in the fog. Huge iron gates
hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the
rusted bars. Two statues of armed guardians silently flank the
gate. Their heads, missing from their shoulders, now lie among
the weeds at their feet. They greet you only with silence.

I look about the gates, and at what I can see of the village beyond. (Are the gates open or closed? Are there any guards? What, if anything, can we see of the village? Can any townsfolk be seen?)

As you approach the gates for a closer look they begin to screech open as if moved by some unseen hand. The mists are thick here and beyond the gate lies only more forest.

Towering trees, whose tops are lost in heavy gray mist extend into the distance until they too disappear into deathly gray fog. The woods beyond the gate have the silent feeling of a forgotten grave. There is no sign of the village you seek within the range of your vision though with the mists making it impossible even to see one another at all times you can not be sure what lies beyond.

"Pelor beckons us on, see how the gates part so we may more swiftly vanquish the evil ahead! Onward, brave souls! But be watchful, our victory may be sure but shall not be easy."

Leaning in to Delmar, he whispers, a little too loudly, "we must be brave for the sake of those whose faith may be weaker than our own..."

(In a normal voice.)"What Barkley? oh sorry I have been so quiet but something about these woods just takes the breath right out of me. Brave you say, I do believe you have far more fortitude than I old friend. I'm positively scared out of my wits by the things that are happening. Any sane person with half a brain would be"

"Adeya, Nice work on the supplies by the way. Don't look so surprised dear, I have long known how my friend old Barley Corn, gets his tasks done. That's one of the things that will make him an exceptional patriarch when his time comes. We'll just skip over all the factors that might get in the way."

In a very serious yet lighthearted voice. "By the way Adeya, he positively hates it when people call him Barley Corn so you probably shouldn't do that."

Sniffs the air , "I think Cram is that way. He may have taken a bath but his armor sure didn't. I think I'd like to be up front with him in case anything interesting happens."

"Something tells me it is not Pelor who is beckoning us, Friend Barkley," I note flatly. Then, in a humorous tone, I add, "But mother always said it was rude to turn down an invitation."

So saying, I take position behind Delmar, and shake my wrists to make sure my sleeves are not binding.

With a grimace, and mumbling something to the effect of "Blasted unnatural fog..." Kryndal follows.

"We need to make sure we are not at the rear, Adeya," Breon remarks. "We are likely approaching danger, but dangers may follow us as well," he continues, as he nudges his horse forward.

"Be strong, friend Delmar. Clearly this evil works to turn us against each other before we begin. Do not become its tool."

"And barley is a noble grain. You liked it well enough last night when you were drinking it by the flagonful... Oops, forgive me, the evil reaches to me as well."

Cram steps out from near the wall and gates.

"You all talk about evil. Point me at it, and I will destroy it. Through the gates, then? I will lead the way of course."

Cram remounts his horse, and slowly begins to coax the mount through the gate.

"I'm glad you are pleased with the horses and supplies," I say to Delmar moving my horse closer to my friends. "I didn't do much really, just asked a stable-hand at the inn. He was a nice man too. Nice smile, nice eyes, nice biceps, nice..." I trail off and feign a cough.

"Um, so this fog is most unusual," I say louder. "It kind of makes my skin crawl. Breon do you sense any magic at work here?" I reach out with my own arcane senses as well and try to figure out what is causing this fog and what it could mean for our party.

A sense of foreboding fills your heart and mind as you do. However it is your more mundane senses that spot something foreign laying half concealed from sight by the underbrush that flanks the road at the edge or your vision. As your party rides closer to the tangled mass the smell of decay assaults your senses. It does not take long to identify as human remains.

By his garb the man looked to have been a simple villager or gypsy. The remains of his clothes are torn and raked with claw marks from some sort of animal attack. The paw prints of many large wolves are pressed into the clay around the body. From the smell alone the man has obviously been dead for several days. More disconcerting though he still holds a crumpled envelope in his hand. The parchment is worn and flimsy from exposure but still bears the unmistakable seal of the burgomaster pressed into red wax.
