TOPIC: VTD app suggestion

VTD app suggestion 2 months 1 week ago #1

Given some recent comments around difficulty selection and new players, I wonder if this could be done for VTDs:

1. The app asks each player to select the highest difficulty they would like to play, along with some contextual information like:

Normal - The default difficulty - this will be the selected difficulty unless people unanimously want a different one. A fair, but difficult, challenge to survive with starting equipment.

Nonlethal - For those who wish to enjoy all the experience of the dungeon without the possibility of dying.

Hardcore - Monsters have more AC, HP, and hit harder. Very difficult for players who have not acquired additional tokens to improve their stats.

Nightmare - Monsters have even more AC, HP, and hit even harder. Typical monster AC around 25. Difficult even for very well equipped parties.

And then each player chooses the highest level they wish to play at independently.

The DM gets that information and announces the result.

The resulting difficulty is:
Nonlethal if everyone said nonlethal
Hardcore if some people said hardcore and no one said Nonlethal or Normal
Nightmare if everyone said nightmare
Normal otherwise

For VTD just leverage the zoom poll feature

That's a great idea - the core is that the voting should be anonymous to other dungeon delvers.

There are nuances too. Like I can play nightmare period or I am willing to play nightmare if others will carry me or donate gear. Maybe could be part of the vtd selection of class?

Sounds like a great idea!

I think those nuances are a reason to do it live during coaching, and not at ticket-buying time. There can be a brief discussion beforehand, and people able to loan extra gear can say so, and if that results in everybody legit being happy to play Nightmare then awesome, BUT only if everyone actually clicks a checkbox for Nightmare in the official anonymous poll. If you're not comfortable with a difficulty level, no confrontation or extra action required, just don't select it in the poll.

You have to be VERY careful about unintentionally through your enthusiasm and love of the game, foisting other players (specifically newer players) to play at a level that is uncomfortable or un-enjoyable for them. There is a post in which this situation occurred this weekend. Please take CAUTION when discussing playing anything other than non-lethal or normal when playing with new players. Also remember - the loan of tokens is not ALWAYS appreciated. At GHC, as one of the coaches, I had several experiences in which players attempted to loan tokens to newer players and they specifically said "They would rather play with what they have then borrow tokens."

Just be mindful

Wise words, Bob! This is especially crucial in this weird time we are currently in where there is an influx of newer players because of VTD. When you join a PUG, you should always be prepared to run it on NORMAL.

In the td.events page, would it be possible in the same screen where you select classes to also select "highest difficulty you would like to play", then the run could show both what classes are available as well as the highest difficulty the run can be? Clicking a run could then end up looking something like this:

Length: 2 hrs
Total tickets: 10
Available tickets: 2
Purchased tickets: 8
All selected characters: Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Wizard
Your selected character: Rogue
Highest available difficulty: Nightmare

I've had a total of 0 arguments in any VTD game about who is playing what class since class pre-selection started, it might be nice for people to just be able to jump into the run and have the coach just be like: "I see that hardcore has been selected" or something to that extent. Players could also see when buying tickets whether there are a lot of people who want to play a difficulty they aren't interested in, either because it is too high or too low.

In theory, I like the idea but ONLY if it were anonymous. So no one would have any fear of checking something worried about everyone else seeing their selections.

Yep, I figured that was similar to how character selection already works- you know the classes chosen but you don't know who did it (at least until the game starts, but even then that's only because knowing who is which class is relevant in game. In this the choice would never have reason to come up).

I can see how this would be useful for letting people self-sort to a certain extent. It seems less flexible than a live Zoom poll, but maybe for this particular purpose less flexible is a feature.

Regardless of whether we do it in td.events or a live Zoom poll, I would suggest avoiding "highest" and instead asking each player to check a box for every difficulty level they are willing to play. Two reasons: I think it subtly reinforces "all levels are good" thinking (vs "higher levels are better"), and also it lets players embrace or veto Non-lethal using the same mechanic they use to embrace or veto Epic.

If we do it in td.events, the summary display for the run could then start out as

Available difficulty levels: Non-lethal, Normal, Hardcore, Nightmare, Epic

and remove options from the list as they become unavailable.

Also, in td.events there could be an actual checkbox for Normal in the poll which is forcibly selected all the time as a reminder to everyone. :)

If you check TD Event, TD has made a change in their schedule. I'm assuming its based upon this feedback.
The following runs are listed as "Normal Only". I assume at some point, if tickets to any of those runs remain completely unsold that they would remove the designation. But at least you know going into those runs to expect to play normal.

Saturday
10am
11am
1 pm
2 pm
3 pm
4 pm

Sunday
10am
11am
1 pm
2 pm
3 pm
4 pm

Event description have also been updated to indicate that 12 runs are set aside as normal.

Note: Twelve of the 120 time slots have been set aside for players who wish to play on the "Normal" difficulty setting. These are for newer gamers who wish a less challenging event.
