They're both really close to the convention center--a 2-3 minute drive. I haven't stayed at either, but am booked at the Sheraton this year. In 2019, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, which is basically two doors further down from the Sheraton. The Holiday Inn Express is very convenient location-wise, so I am assuming the Sheraton will be marginally better. (The Sheraton was a little cheaper than the Holiday Inn Express this time, so I'm giving it a try.) I don't have any first-hand experience with the Home 2, so can't comment. Parking at the con is free, which is nice because (a) tokens are heavy and (b) it can get cold in Madison in October/November.

I've stayed at the Sheraton, it was good. I haven't stayed at Home2. If you won't have a car, Home2 would be an easier walk. You could cut through the Clarion.

Good points...we will be flying in so mist of the weekend will be walking/uber type transport. Our home2 reservations are half as much for the con as the Sheraton is.. Just wanting to know if there are any big issues or reasons for one versus the other. How are the restaurants?

If I remember correctly, the venue itself has a small food court with typical con food—pizza, nachos, hot dogs, etc. There are also a handful of food trucks/stalls outside with a greater variety of choices. (Think 4-6 vendors; nothing like the two full blocks of food trucks at GenCon.) One issue with them being outside is that you might want to get your coat before venturing out if it is cold that weekend. But it’s Madison, so people are nice and someone will probably hold the door for you if your hands are full when you’re coming back from the food trucks with stuff to eat inside. (This is all subject to change due to Covid, of course.)

The Sheraton has a hotel bar/restaurant. I ate there once last year. It was fine. Nothing to write home about, totally standard Midwestern hotel restaurant food. I don’t know much about what the other hotels offer, if anything, beyond a buffet breakfast.

My sense is that if you want a nice pub/restaurant, you have to get away from the convention center. It’s not like GenCon where there are multiple “real restaurants” at various price points within walking distance of the convention center. But I’ve only been to GHC a handful of times. People who’ve gone more often or live in Madison may have better information.

The breakfast at the Sheraton restaurant is very solid, and if you have status with the hotel you get vouchers for free breakfast (or at least I did last GHC)

The meals are good enough we ate breakfast every morning in the hotel.

The food trucks were solid options for lunch and we either drove to dinner or ordered in pizza/subs for delivery dinner.

It is much less available than Gencon as mentioned but there's solid options in the area or deliverable.

There is a new BBQ place right next to the Home2 it's a bit pricy but pretty good. That's the only thing within walking distance but grubhub or eat street will do food drop offs as well.

We've got rooms at the clarion and the Home2Suites. I plan to drop the prior and take the latter. I like H2S. The rooms have a small kitchenette and a full fridge. The rooms are also nice and spacious and their breakfast is pretty good. We like that it's walking distance to the convention center. Sheraton was not on our radar because I don't want to have to deal with my car during the convention after we get there, but that's my preference.

I'm pretty sure we are going to use our home2 reservations and drop our Sheraton rooms....the almost double the cost and not hearing any way over the top reasons to stay at Sheraton just makes sense.

At same cost for both hotels I go Sheraton. At Sheraton double the cost of the opposing hotel I go with the opposing.

Nothing at Game Hole Con is worth multiple hundreds of dollars difference on hotel rooms.

With little.kids at GHC, I like not having to go outside ever.

Clarion breakfast is fine, of a little greasy.

Having a room above the free beer reception is nice.

The clarion was showing as fully booked...not sure if that included rooms for volunteers and the convention block.
