With all these large vendors bowing out, maybe this will give smaller game companies an opportunity to grab the spotlight.

Though, who knows, maybe with the limitations there won't be much gamimg at all...

This is exactly what my company is going to take advantage of. It could be a blessing in disguise for us and as a result I am going to start promoting an event we have planned for Gen Con that may appeal to many True Dungeon fans...

A tabletop RPG game with a TD feel through a 3D miniature dungeon in 1 hour slots of 4 player teams. You accumulate Dungeon Points as you go along to be used to exchange for real loot at the Gooey Cube vendor booth? If you've watched our gameshow streams you will see that 3D dungeon setup. We are bringing it to Gen Con and would be willing to open up more event slots.

You can see an example of the game and 3D dungeon here:

Would love to see you there!

Hmmm. This looks interesting. I will check this out!

I think many of these companies are going to regret not going to GC. Seems like every day there is more good news about the pandemic (knock on wood - I understand there was a large, mostly unmasked Mardi Gras event in Alabama, a state with only about 1/3 of people vaccinated).

The stream shows off the nature of the dungeon and the concept of Dungeon Points. But it also shows that much of the game play mechanics are very simple actions augmented by fun role play. Combat is fast. The DM guidance will be based on a strict set of results based on player actions and the roll of the dice. It's going to be linear so as to keep it balanced. Fast paced with a number of objectives possible in each room to help players earn Dungeon Points. With each session only lasting 1 hour it will behoove the players to dig deep into the room layout and description before them to guide their actions. I think many will enjoy the concept as it's a fun little mix of RP, dice rolling, combat, puzzle solving, and systematic loot gathering.

GenCon’s next update should just be a list of groups/retailers/publishers who WILL be there.

Yeah, that would be helpful--that could push me back into the 'going' category.

Agreed.

Combine that with proof of vaccination required and that will cement people’s decisions. Yes, while vaccinated you are unlikely to die from Covid (it has, unfortunately happened, though) but you can still get seriously sick (far worse than con crud level.) The bigger picture is ending Covid requires we stop variants - that can inly be done through vaccination as Brazil proved prior infection doesn’t matter when multiple variants are present. Less infections = ending variants.

With how many people are freeloading off the responsible people getting vaccinated, I’m definitely not willing to risk my family’s health over an event that could have chosen to keep people safe but didn’t. I already waived my season tickets for one sporting franchise over their being irresponsible, Gencon would be no different.

Indiana is currently 33% fully vaccinated, which puts us at 40th out of 50 states. I don't expect the state to ever reach herd immunity, sadly.

My state, CA, is at about 50% - not bad for a state with a population larger than that of most nations!

I think GC should require vaccines, but I won't derail another discussion. Even if they do, I think GC made a mistake not announcing a requirement earlier - I think it would have affected the number of both attendees and companies going.

Yeah, that would be helpful--that could push me back into the 'going' category.

It's my understanding that there is a wait-list of companies, and that when one decides not to attend, others are given an opportunity to go, so while some of the big names might not be going, there are other companies that could replace them.

It's not quite apples to apples. The companies bailing are at higher sponsorship levels - not just booth vendor level. Asmodee, Paizo, Upper Deck, Rio Grande, True Dungeon, etc - they don't have a waiting list for co-sponsors, contributing sponsors, etc. because the asking price is steep ($25K for the lowest - event sponsor up to $75K for co-sponsor.) That's before any investment to actually be at GC. A co-sponsor is spending $150K+ - even Event Sponsors are doing $50K+. I'm sure there was a waiting list at the booth level at $2,500 - $5,000 but not at the higher levels. Filling the exhibitor hall would mean replacing every big company with 2-3 smaller companies. That might be possible but would mean pretty substantial gaps elsewhere like the parties each night, etc are paid for by sponsors, quite a few special events are sponsor funded, etc..

It might actually be better if they don't replace people in the exhibitor hall and have the exhibitor hall not be crowed for once. After the past year, there was no way I was going into a packed exhibitor hall again. It may be years before quite a few people are willing to do that.

What do you mean, not given the go-ahead. Wouldn’t GC have exhibitors mostly settled by now? Are they still waiting for further COVID issues to be settled wrt state and local health officials?
