Why wouldn't there be evening flights? I doubt I could take an earlier flight because I would have to skip school for the day, which wouldn't be good because I am already skipping school on Friday.

It is good that the later date gives us another month and a half of improving conditions regarding COVID, but having it during school instead of summer is a pain. Plus now we'll be competing with a football game!

It’s a ~4 hour flight and Indiana is 3 hours ahead of LA time zone wise.

Airports are generally not handling arrivals between say midnight and 6 AM - doing so would mean they have to have staff on hand and most people wouldn’t want to arrive during those times so there would be little demand.

Hence flight schedules from LA to Indianapolis will tend to avoid leaving LA roughly between 5 PM and 11 PM.

I guess that makes sense.

I usually leave late morning so I arrive with enough time to check in to the hotel before the 5:00 volunteer meeting, but if Lori's OK with me missing that, I could probably wait as late as 8:00 or 9:00. Then again, in order to get to Chicago by then you'd have to depart LA about 2:00, at which point you're better off just flying directly to Indy.

Like I said, I don't think the timing works

I agree with everything Wade said pretty much, since moving from Chicago I've had to do red-eye to Indy, or fly out Wednesday from LAX or SNA by 2pm to either Ohare or Indy to get there before they close. I don't think it will be much different for Ontario or Burbank as it's more about the arriving airport time than the departing airports.

When I did the red-eye the adrenaline of GenCon kept me going Thursday all day (can't sleep on planes) but it was a lot more difficult than taking Wednesday off to fly during the day, which of course may not be an option for you because of school.

I would avoid ontario if you can. I dont know what's been going on with them since covid, but either way they are notoriously expensive. Most of us up here find it cheaper to drive to and fly out of Detroit.

Assuming he meant Ontario. California.

Also, I suspect you'll find the same at nearly all western airports. Arrive before midnight local. Or after 6 am local, for the reasons stated above.

I didnt know you had one, though I'll admit the original post had me a bit confused.

Can’t sleep on planes either. Too nervous.

Indy airport closes pretty early. I've been on a flight leaving at like 8PM because of a delay and basically they shut the airport down around us. All the stores were closed and the cleaners were basically waiting for us to board so they could finish and go home.

Well, you can imagine LAX is very different. Pretty busy at all times.

Sooooo, I have booked my flights for GC 2021. My principal might not like my calling in on Friday the 17th because Thursday is a day off, but I've been absent from work like once in the past three years.

The change in dates made this much more challenging. Normally I would fly in the Tuesday before (as a TD volunteer) and leave late Sunday, if not Monday. But I'm flying the red-eye out and arriving before dawn Thursday (so I'll still have the full day), then I'll be leaving at stupid-o-clock in the morning Sunday (6:30 am) and missing the last day. Three pretty good reasons, though - it was the cheapest itinerary, both flights are non-stop (and the less I have to fly the better - really anxious about it), and I will have the entire day at home with my wife, whose birthday is the next day.

Now on to worry about hotels and ground transportation!
