If you failed the puzzle, you get the skull but it does nothing.

Players without good ranges builds could focus on the wights instead. Or you can be the one party member with the functional skull who attacks in melee. This did act as a reminder that your ranged build is just as important as your melee build. Many combats have mechanics that punish players who aren’t well-rounded. For example, many of her attacks required having well-rounded saves and not just going all into damage if you wanted to take a turn. From my understanding, she still took the full damage you dealt, she just also caused retribution damage when attacked in melee without the functional skull.

Killing her was relatively easy but we had some things going for us

1. Our monk had Benrow so her hits didn’t get retribution. Even without Benrow a shirt of shielding (old version) was immune to retribution
2. Our wizard and monk knew the strategy...monk has “effectively” four rolls to stun. If on first attack, monk missed, we mazed the necro at the end of round...if monk got crit on first two rolls, wizard mazed on second (this is always our strategy and the ranger carries two maze scrolls as well (elder yew))
3. We had high initiative so winning initiative helped
4. We gave the skull to Barbarian to maximize their hit
5. Ranger was ranged
6. If wights spawned in third round, necro was already close to dead so battle was manageable
7. The dwarf fighter takes taunts and if necessary “dies” with revives ready
8. Paladin protects the wizard but ultimately, by being able to have the maze round, we could heal everyone in the “quiet round” for all the retribution damages (we carry tons of potions)
