Hadn't thought of that. Good point.

Here are the most logical solutions that the groups I ran with came up with:

I would hope a DM would tell a group if a note was misleading or wrong. What kind of group would do that, anyway?

They probably didn't even get a free t-shirt out of the deal.

I also think tptb probably had different notes ready to go if one group left a "bad" clue, particularly if the next group was relatively new.

Our clue got vetoed by the GM. Probably because it gave away too much.

Wow. Once you see it, it seems so obvious, but I felt really clueless on this one while doing it.

I see it, and I still don't agree that it's "obvious". I can see how that might be it, but there are about a million ways to connect those dots.

I wouldn't expect anyone to automatically make that leap, with the information given, especially once you consider that in a recent dungeon, there were runes that had nothing to do with the puzzle at all.

The word "points" also seems to have had a lot of people looking for something pointy, or corners. When I read "points" the last thing that comes to mind is "flat areas". Yes they were raised above.

Perhaps instead of "look to the points raised above" it had said something like "used together the points raised above will reveal..." might have been a nudge in the right direction.

I rather liked the option to leave a note for the next group. I felt it left the opportunity for a shared experience. Perhaps something like this in the future, but with limited word choices or a limited number of letters available.

There is at least one additional way to determine the correct place for the skull (and two maybe coincidental ways that weren't intentional):
