I don't envy Jeff. He really does a great job, but .....
Well, just one poor person's opinion.
If I think overall about what I want in a wizard legendary, it would probably fall into one of these three categories.
1. Increase overall spell damage.
2. Increase spell damage done in a single round (once/twice per dungeon)
3. Give me something fun and creative to do as a wizard, even if it doesn't do much for damage.
Round 1 Grades
1. A - The free action spells greatly increase my overall damage totals. Too much? Depends upon perspective.
2. F - Didn't do anything to increase my big hit in room 7.
3. B - Spellbook and familiars. Needs some tweaking, but I love the direction we're headed in.
4. Overall - B loving where we're headed.
Round 2 Grades
1. A - The free action spells are still there. And with the added spellbook spells, this will be fun.
2. F - My top round damage really isn't changing. Might drop a little because of other slots I have to give up.
3. A - Maybe the familiar mechanics aren't perfect, but the fun I'm going to have with this is awesome.
4. Overall - A not perfect, but actually exceeds my expectations going into the process.
Round 3 Grades
1. B - We lost some free action spells, but the overall increase is still substantial. MMM effect might help in later rounds, but in almost insignificant and unlikely to be used by me.
2. F - Still no increase to those big hit rounds. I guess that will only be addressed with additional focus items and not part of this path.
3. D - We lost familiars, but agree its better to do them right than rush them into play. Spellbook becomes a neck slot item. Huh? Who carries a spellbook around their neck?
4. Overall - D for disappointed in how much things changed (for the worse). MEC and MMM effects add nothing to my build I don't already have. Spellbook in the neck slot doesn't really impact me since I'd upgrade to the relic, but thematically its just "wrong". Do Paladins need to carry their sword around their neck? It's shoehorning a fun concept into a bad design. I really don't care if its over or underpowered as a slotless item, it just partially ruins the immersiveness of the game. IMHO.
Round 4
Incomplete.
I read that the Spellbook is moving to the Charm slot. Thematically, its a very small improvement. At least I'm not wearing that book around my neck. Still doesn't feel completely "wizardish".
These are just my overall feelings about the journey we've been on the past week. Will this dampen my enthusiasm toward TD or overal feelings of gratitude toward Jeff? Nope. Will it make me less enthusiastic to continue playing a wizard/elf wizard? Maybe. Let's see where we end up.
Thanks again Jeff for including us in this process.
