The impact of all the conventions cancelling--and providing refunds--was that they announced that they'd have to shut down after May 1st.

There has been a resurgence of support for them, and they are trying to continue after they've gotten so much support from the community.

It is likely that Gen Con is in a similar position: the losses from credit card charges, lost deposits, etc. could easily mean the end of the convention.

I love gen con but it’s a business and that incurs risk, just like I love true dungeon but if they said “hey in order for me to continue my business I need everyone to make a 20$ donation”. Just not gonna happen.

On a different note is it Impossible for true dungeon to hold events without a con ? They would be able to rent from a college or something and would have to pay to rent the space but I would think that would be cheeper than what a con charges

It was the first thing that popped out to me. I also think it is pretty crappy of them. I’m not blinded by my love of Gen Con to know a crap deal when I see one.

maybe the 10$ is paying for the deposits they lost on the convention center. It sucks but at least we get most of it back along with not hotel charge

If this is the case I chalk that up to the cost of doing business don’t you ? They don’t want to lose their money why should we have to lose ours?
I am not in the boat where this 10$ hurts me, it’s simply principle. I usually spend about 100$ on gen con merchandise but will forgo this purchase due to terrible customer service and condescending attitude on the forums. If they keep up their terrible customer relations I might just skip the con period.

I agree their communication was not as strong as GHC. But condescending? I don’t get that.

I suspect there was a lot of behind the scenes negotiations going on to avoid catastrophic penalties. The extension of the contract for two years rather than one was the big concession.

The moderator that they use would use a copy and paste comment to almost all concerns and never answered any questions. One post I remember had a guy saying that it would be nice to get a min of a bi- monthly update even if that update was to say “nothing new to report”. The moderator quoted “nothing new to reporters” their are you happy. That was his response. This was as recient as last week so it was an out and out lie considering this kinda decision didn’t happen where yesterday they were planning gen con and woke up today to say naw let’s cancel.

I agree that a lot was going on behind the scenes but once again I ask, how can every other convention give information but them ?

Because different conventions have different legal agreements in place with their convention centers and the other entities they have business relationships with? GenCon may not have legally been allowed to say anything else until now.

And as the largest convention, they likely have more of those legal agreements in place than the rest.

I have no problem personally with GENCON charging a $10 fee for a badge refund, if it helps them stay in business so we can have GENCON's into the future. There are at least a couple of badge options that don't involve a $10 fee, including rolling the badge to 2021 or getting system credit for it. I don't have any hard feelings about how GENCON has handled this whole issue. I'm glad they made a go/no go decision more than two months before GENCON.

It’s also possible they were trying to negotiate a later date that would allow postponement rather than cancellation. A tall order for a gathering of that size and complexity.

When you agreed to Gencon's updated T&C prior to buying your badge in bold font was the mention of the $10 badge refund fee. This isn't something they sprung on everyone.

I am rolling my badge over to 2021. I will weigh in on the $10.00 fee however. It would not bother me to pay the $10.00. Karma has a way of working itself around to straighten things out. Just the other day I found a $20.00 bill laying on the ground. Life is what you make of it. I prefer to be positive and look forward to attending Origins and GHC this fall. I'd bet that they did try to postpone before an outright cancellation, that seems to be the logical thing to do.

That would be if I cancel and if it was my decision then I would have no problem eating the cost

Cheers mate! I chose to roll my badge too. Now I just have to convince he wife that more tokens are in order since I have no way to get Golden Fleece or argonite this year without a few additional purchases.
