Just out of curiosity, what were their reasons?

D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Basically, a few things (paraphrased):
-Demand for connected ADA rooms started to far exceed supply, so they needed a new system
-Desire for that new system to be consistent across all attendees (charitable explanation); OR phone support for ADA was expensive (less charitable)
-People abused system since ADA (correctly) protects privacy, similar to claiming any pet as a "service animal"

At least, that's what I recall.

I recall the abuse that led to overwhelming demand.

Because an insurance payout is a LOT more difficult then you think. This would require pandemic insurance, traditional insurance, act of god etc, does not cover a pandemic, it is specifically excluded in insurance coverage. Even with pandemic insurance they might still not get a payout, there has been stories where insurance companies are refusing to cover anything because COVID-19 is not one of the virus options named in the pandemic insurance.

Knowing what I do about the cost of the credit card charges, and how even though Gen Con is a giant event, it is a single event once a year. I am fine with the options we have been given. A $10 fee seems reasonable, and customers can get back the majority of their money. I am willing to just let my badge roll over to 2021, I will be back, and I want there to be a Gen Con to return to next year.

My company actually has business continuity insurance. It includes a provision about "acts of god." They declined coverage despite millions in losses. Some States require that you have epidemic explicitly spelled out in the insurance policy to allow for coverage. We'll almost certainly end up in court with the insurance company over it (since we're in 40+ states, it appears to apply in some but not others). Best guess, they'll declare bankruptcy before we see a dime. If not, it's 3+ years from now.

Oh, a thought after someone mentioned typical price increases: can I still buy a gencon badge NOW at this year price and get it rolled over to next year?
Since I don't need a hotel room, I typically buy badges a week before event reg, but if buying now saves money for next year...

I believe one of the forum moderators said people can do that.
