I guess the standby meant it was cancelled.

I'm glad they are thinking about people's safety!

Now, lets hope things settle down and Orgins takes place!!

Cheers,

My concern with Origins is that it is so close to GHC that I may have to choose one or the other. I'm honestly not sure if either will actually occur.

i would say chose Origins, if it doesnt happen you can fall back on GHC

They address this on their forums. The $10 fee covers credit card fees that they incur, among other things. I'm guessing managing tens of thousands of these things will be a full time job, and that eating the potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs isn't financially viable for them.

It's a clear bit of incentivizing; if the money is important enough, then $10 shouldn't be too steep. If it's not that needed and people can afford to roll it forward for next year, then great, they break even, no loss incurred (unless we want to quibble about people getting interest or investments or something, but let's not walk that path of insanity during times of market flux).

It's not ideal, but I'm guessing they're trying to do the best they can for as many as possible without financially mortally shooting themselves while they're at it.

How can a con like ghc have a no fee cancelling process but gen con does? I would like to agree with you that they are doing the best that they can because the 4 days I spend at gen con are the best 4 days of the year but their condescending tone and lack of information given really just rubbed me the wrong way.

GHC goes through paypal. So if you refund through paypal, they don't charge fees

I don't have access to their books, but I'm guessing that GHC seeing (according to Google) around 4,000 attendees, and Gencon sees somewhere around 20 times as many. Perhaps it's just not financially feasible for them to eat the various credit card processing fees on top of tens of thousands of refunds.

Even a couple of bucks apiece adds up when talking about that many transactions along with 'oops like all our revenue just evaporated'.

It's not ideal, but I'm guessing this is part of them trying to remain financially viable for there to be a 2021 Gencon. But I could be wrong. It's not ideal, and I empathize with people for whom the money would be really useful right now, and getting less of it back would sting.

On a different note is it Impossible for true dungeon to hold events without a con ? They would be able to rent from a college or something and would have to pay to rent the space but I would think that would be cheeper than what a con charges

It was the first thing that popped out to me. I also think it is pretty crappy of them. I’m not blinded by my love of Gen Con to know a crap deal when I see one.

maybe the 10$ is paying for the deposits they lost on the convention center. It sucks but at least we get most of it back along with not hotel charge

From the email they sent, there are multiple options on how to handle the badge:

Here are the options for your Gen Con 2020 badge:

1. If you are willing to roll your badge forward to 2021, then you're all set — we'll do this automatically, with great appreciation.

2. If you'd like a refund to the original method of purchase, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. between May 26 and July 29. Let us know you'd like a refund, and include your name and Gen Con ID number (find it next to your name in the corner while logged in). We'll process a refund minus a $10 per badge return fee.

3. If you'd like to return your badge for system credit, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. between May 26 and July 29 and we will credit your Gen Con account. Please include your name and Gen Con ID number. Returns to system credit incur no return fees, and system credit does not expire.

4. You can donate the cost of your badge to help us weather the storm and come back strong for Gen Con 2021. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. between May 26 and July 29 and include your name and Gen Con ID number if you'd like to pursue this option.

Note: Refund requests will not be accepted until May 26, and must be received by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by July 29. Please include your choice of action for your badge, your name, and your Gen Con ID number (find it to the right of your name in the corner when you're logged in at gencon.com).

After July 29, all 2020 badges will be rolled over to 2021. If you miss that window or decide later you'd like a refund, you can request one beginning February 1, 2021.

I agree. The challenge is making sure I have time off work for both.

Also, I don't know how much I want to be in Columbus on a weekend of a home game (assuming NCAA football happens this year).

There is another business, tabletop.events, that handles ticketing for a lot of small cons out there.
The impact of all the conventions cancelling--and providing refunds--was that they announced that they'd have to shut down after May 1st.

There has been a resurgence of support for them, and they are trying to continue after they've gotten so much support from the community.

It is likely that Gen Con is in a similar position: the losses from credit card charges, lost deposits, etc. could easily mean the end of the convention.

If this is the case I chalk that up to the cost of doing business don’t you ? They don’t want to lose their money why should we have to lose ours?
I am not in the boat where this 10$ hurts me, it’s simply principle. I usually spend about 100$ on gen con merchandise but will forgo this purchase due to terrible customer service and condescending attitude on the forums. If they keep up their terrible customer relations I might just skip the con period.
