Long time no post. Wow; it's been three years since I've logged on.
Kids are older (11 and 13 yo) Looks like our family of four will be going to Gen Con this year.

1) would like to pair up with other TDers. Miss spending time with the volunteers from yesteryear.

2) wondering a few things... such as, what's it like to purchase TD tickets these days? Is there a mad rush and are my chances about 2% that I'd get tickets? I don't want to buy badges and register for a hotel room if I'm going to roll a 1 on buying TD tickets.

Raven, Barry, anyone? Thanks!

It is very competitive and sells out very quickly. Depending on your luck and flexibility you can do ok.

IF you don't get tickets through Gen Con, come back to the forums. Usually folks have extra tickets.
You either discover a star or you don't. You arrogant punk.

Agreed, i'm stilling doing Gencon as my local gaming group still is going and i really like the city and venue. I've done and plan to do more runs and actual hanging out with fellow TD'ers at Origins and Game hole con.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Thanks, all. I appreciate your input. I was aware of those details.. Due to constraints, such as choosing not to pull our daughter out of her freshmen year of high school for 3-4 days while she is in four honors classes, we have chosen to go to Gen Con. This is why I posted in the Gen Con section.
I played and volunteered in at least 2006-2008 (maybe longer).
If I am correct, Gen Con now runs 4 dungeons, doubling the size.
Are they still at 10 players? I really liked 8 better.

In the past, the registration system has been so crappy that many people couldn't get tickets. I always used 2-3 computers to try to nab what I wanted. It was insane.

Is this process any better? Sounds like it isn't.

Thanks.

It's 10 per party now.

The Gen Con event system has changed a bit though, now here is what you do:

1. Before registration goes live you can enter some number (50?) of eventsi in your registration "wishlist"

2. Then, when registration goes live, Gen Con either just automatically processes the wishlists in some random order, or maybe you have to be there to click submit right at 12 eastern (I don't recall which).

3. When processing a wishlists, events will be selected in the order of your wishlist, and the system will not grant you events that overlap in time (except for a few special ones like tournaments).

But - the upshot of that is it's pretty easy to get TD tickets for your entire run/party if you are flexible, you just do this:

1. Decide which dungeon you want to play.

2. Pick a 4 hour block of time where you wish to do the dungeon.

3. Put in your wishlist the 8-10 runs on the dungeon of your choise starting during the first 2 hours of your 4 hour block, and select the right number of tickets for your groups, and check the "all or none" box indicating you only want tickets if you can get exactly the right number.

I have never had a problem getting my runs following this procedure.

You are, however, limited to something like 50 wishlist slots, so depending on how many total runs you want and what other events you want to put on your wishlist you can run out of wishlist space.

Matthew, thanks! That procedure is totally new to me. Sounds better than it was before.
Didn't mean to sound ungrateful to the others; their kindness in offering assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks for helping.

In addition to his explanation of the new system, a few strategy pointers:
1. Hitting 'submit' in multiple browsers no longer works, the system attaches a priority number to your account. Hitting submit again (if you even can) will lose your place in line and put you last in the queue.
2. Buy your family badges on separate accounts. Each account can have a wishlist to submit and try for a better place in line. There are two general strategies for multiple wishlist attempts: same events in all and buy everything in the first cart processed (risky, but if your schedule is tight, this is how you get your top choice time) OR make each wishlist different and after they process sort out what you want to keep.
this is not a signature.

John! So glad to hear that you’ll be back, and with your whole family! We’d love to get in a run with you guys. How many runs are you thinking? At $62/person (I tihink) it can get expensive quick. Pick a day/general time, and we can try and grab a full run for us + you and the family, and find 4 more on the forums to fill it out. We can help equip your family with tokens, too, and pay you back for the wonderful welcome you showed us when we started playing in 2007! Glad to have you back!

Oh, and hotel reg is this Sunday - it’s an even bigger cluster than before. If you end up in a hotel on the outskirts, don’t despair. You can actually reserve downtown parking spots so driving in isn’t as hard as it used to be.

Jenny! Thank you for your warm welcome back. We would be delighted to accompany you and Tom, on a run.

I've been out of this waaaaay too long. Am I correct that an event list won't be available until after May?

Right now, our plan is to drive over on Wednesday and be ready for fun and adventure Thursday through Sunday.
As such, any day and almost any time should work for us. Our kids are 11 and 13 (although they will be 12 and almost 14 come August) and they typically go to bed before 9:00pm. In other words, late night runs may not be the best for them.

My Binia Sash is tucked away in a keepsake box. I'll get it out and have it ready.

We might want to get in some Basic, 1st edition, or 2nd edition D&D, but we're mostly coming for True Dungeon and Friends! (Here's hoping a bunch of the volunteers I know are still attending.)

Smackdown? Barry? Raven? Gary and Sis? Will and wife?

Thanks for saying hello! Drop me a PM or e-mail if you want to hammer out details. Sound good?

Yeah!

Kurtreznor,

Thanks for the additional information. The warning about the shopping cart button is very useful since that has changed since I last attended.

As luck would have it, we created three new accounts for my family members and bought badges separately with each account before the deadline last night. Looks like three of us got 8pm+ housing slots while my wife nabbed a 1:45p housing shopping slot. We listed three hotels we'd like to stay at, so I hope that we'll be able to nab one of those. If not, we'll consider staying at something cheap and with free food but 10 miles away. Have to pay for downtown parking anyway.... but I'd rather have a room very near the convention. Due to sweating, I prefer not to walk several blocks downtown in August.

Not sure what to do about shopping for events. I figure we should try to nab the TD stuff first, and then worry about getting D&D games or any non-TD events.

Would like to set up 10-packs with people we know (or other TD enthusiasts). We'd be happy to nab some (luck be with us) and work it out with our friends.

I'm guessing we'll want to go on up to four (4) runs, just like when volunteering. How many runs do you guys go on, Binia? I'd have to check to see how many various dungeons there are this year. Man... I am finding it difficult to fight the temptation to buy large numbers of tokens.
