TOPIC: True Dungeon History - Memorabilia Auctions

True Dungeon History - Memorabilia Auctions 2 years 10 months ago #1

In the early days of True Dungeon before Transmutation, there was a problem. There wasn’t a good use for gold pieces. People would trade tokens for other tokens but no one valued gold pieces. There was a lot of discussion about this in the forums.

In 2005, there was a one year experiment where TD had 3 stores in the Cityscape that accepted gold for other tokens. However this require a lot of staff, and because Jeff underestimated the popularity of tokens, the stores ran out to tokens. Much activity occurred to try to keep the stores supplied. Pricing of tokens also was an issue. There was a set list of prices and some of them were too low. This experiment was not repeated after 2005.

So in 2006, Jeff tried other ideas. First was the silent auction for the “Artisan tokens”. There was a set of non-game tokens that were created and people would place bids throughout the con. (There a second set auctioned at GenCon SoCal, and a third set mixed in with the treasure)

In addition I think the first memorabilia auction was also in 2006. (Although the auction may have started in 2007). In the memorabilia auction Jeff would take interesting items from previous year’s dungeon and token and put them up for auction. People could only bid using gold. By having a place to spend large amounts of gold, token traders finally had a good reason to collect gold and the token economy got its start. This auction continued for several years but once we left the Marriot it was hard to find space for it.

I won several items at these auctions and I will to be auctioning these items off on the forums over the next couple of weeks. I will be doing a post explaining the history of the item to help people get interested in bidding.

For example, I have a set of the original sliders, the Horn of Plenty, the Goblet of Healing, the cubes from the fountain puzzle in 2004, a ring of Wizardry worn by a dragon, and some other goodies. As long as people are interest, I will keep running the auctions. I run SLOW auctions, every time there is a bid, I will reset the clock for 24 hours and notify the previous high bidder.

George, I look forward to your memorabilia auctions, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun items to sell that have real True Dungeon history attached to them. :)

These are all going to be cash auctions. I have started a close out sale on my tokens. My goal is to only keep a couple of red/purple play sets.
