I think the term you are looking for is pipe dream.

There's 0 chance they'll be able to have people enforcing mask or social distancing mandates if gencon happens in person. It would require a MASSIVE additional expense to make that happen in any noticeable effect unfortunately.

They could mandate that to attend you need to be vaccinated. It wouldn't be that much more work to check vaccination status during check in, and it'd go a long way towards ensuring safety. They would catch a lot of flack from the anti vaxxers though.

They wouldn't just catch flak from anti-vaxers, but also from those of us far enough down the priority list that we may not be given the option to get the vaccine by then.

I'm really hoping that by August everyone that wants to be vaccinated can be, especially with Biden promising to invoke the Defense Production Act once he takes office. If we're 8 months down the road and still way behind schedule then we just need to give up as a country.

I kind of like that. It reminds me of Firefly when they referred to "the Earth That Was".
Makes me wonder if we will always refer to it as "the Con That Was"

I may be optimistic, but I actually think mature gamers might police themselves well enough to enforce masking on one another.

Social distancing is impossible of course, but peer pressure is a real thing.

You haven't seen people in GenCon, board game and D&D groups arguing that enforcing masks is the final step before they load us all into train cars, then. Gamers are in no way immune to the idiocy gene, apparently.

Peer pressure, maybe, but what I think will be the final nail in GenCon's coffin is SPOUSAL pressure.
"If I am not going to concerts, you can't go to game conventions". Valid point, and probably the decisive one.

I've met very few gamers that are as problematic as the media sometimes portrays, but we've all have been around people who haven't showered the entire con weekend. The health and comfort of other people aren't really one of their major concerns.

Fair enough, I guess I was thinking of.people who would show up to a game wearing a mask, then the next player shows up a new "masks are required to play"

Maybe that could even be in the GC book?

Then again, I tend to do better with confrontation than a lot of gamers.

Such confrontations are also something gen-con would have to worry about. Just from a liability perspective you don't want attendees policing stuff like this. From what I hear for example they got sued a year or so ago after a left wing you tuber and a right wing you tuber had a confrontation. Con had nothing to do with it but they got pulled in. I imagine the last thing they want is to have again, and I could totally see it happening over something people feel strongly about like masks.

To be clear I'm not implying anything about any TD fans, I know you guys and none of you would cause trouble for a host con, but given tens of thousands of people its something they will have to worry about.
