In a group of new players, I think your are going to end up losing them if you do something like this.

How many free actions does a rare or less normal difficulty group use?

Also scale it by difficulty. If I’m playing epic, I want the rooms to try to kill me. Hardcore or normal, not so much.

Yeah this would be the nightmare and up room....regular and hardcore could be complete one or the other.

I didn’t realize only rare or less parties would do this room. Carry on.

Did not realize folks were talking about True Grind.

But 2nd/3rd level players geared at Rare tokens and below would sign up for True Grind and get an experience that might be taken too well.

Not grind but just different changes to a final boss room in my thoughts scaled for difficulty.

Alternative room taking up more floor space and possibly reducing run variety at in person conventions.

That sounds like the one encounter in the webseries LARPs. They fought a construct that was nearly invincible while the rogue solved the puzzle to de-activate it.
A pretty cool idea, but yeah, I could see new and casual players getting really frustrated. Maybe the room clue should be more clear, or the creature defeatable on normal.

As I mentioned before the normal and hardcore crowd could choose either way to defeat the room...puzzle or combat where nightmare and up need to do both. I think this could be a fun twist to a room 7 involving more players in the action.

Or create a room where everyone gets attacked that uses a free action, or can’t take free actions at all. A litch that casts some variation of time stop?

That sounds like a really cool room design!
Tho, I wouldn't use it for a boss fight, or you'd (again) get folks Mighty Riled Up that they bought this token to be able to do X as a free action, and now they aren't allowed to use it.

Tho, it might be that the Lich is holding an artifact, and if players target the artifact & break it, then they gain access to their Free Action powers again. That'd be an interesting puzzle-in-a-combat.

There could be some kind of magical puzzle box in the room that is distracting players from taking multiple actions (ie. No free actions). You can ignore it and just combat with only standard actions OR the only thing you CAN do with free actions is try to solve the puzzle box.
But then you risk distracting yourself from the combat...as in, literally distracting you. You can still take standard actions while running over with spare time to work on the puzzle, but the combat isn't going to wait for you. MUA-HA-HA-HAH!

I’ll be honest you’re describing a Gamehole Con room from 5 years back? Either had to deal with the monster, and solve the puzzle, or solve the puzzle, and deal with ignoring the monster.
