I just had a thought.

what would be wrong with mailing out XP cards with the swag for the patron run. this would allow for the use of the set up for virtual GC.

I know I would be prone not to do virtual gc runs since I would already have my XP for the year. I would imagine I might not be the only one. it might free up tickets for more folks and help maximize resources for TD.

only 1 run for XP for 2020. we could do a push for all the other 2020 stuff to 2021.
no need to do 2021 tokens, saves on dungeon design, etc. you get the idea.

Part the challenge with the typical newbie group is while you are working with one player one or more others are trying to ask questions. For the most part, they are truly trying to be helpful by having their tokens laid out and ready. In person, that is distracting but manageable.

My experience with zoom is that it’s much harder to deal with multiple people trying to take at the same time.

Since there are no physical items to restock (I presume) on a virtual run, perhaps the Coach assistants could monitor chat and respond to questions from other players.

A lot depends on how much TD wants to scale things up. Single dungeon or multiples? How many runs total? How many newbie groups do we get? (Perhaps moreif we run hints through GenCon event registration, less if run through TD Events?)

Agree so much. Typically we try to help others so the coach can focus...I think if newer players with limited tokens (and particularly, anyone who would not have a build/be using 10pk tokens in a normal run) require a level of interaction to feel engaged that will be a challenge in the virtual environment. Figuring out a good way to facilitate that will be key to expanding to that player base, IMO, so new players don't feel "along for the ride".

I'll chime in here with my limited knowledge.

We gave the patrons a list of tokens that they could equip their character with and not have to verify via video. If they chose to use tokens that weren't on that list, we reserved the right to ask for visual verification. That would require a web cam.

We do ask that you log into Zoom with a Zoom account and not just use the web client, as having an account (even the free one) enables a video setting (Hide non-video participants) helps greatly in how you will view the adventure.

I started the groups and gave some Zoom info, had the parties test out some of the features, and verified that they had their characters done ahead of time. The DM (Jeff) then came in and started his bit. We learned A LOT! The process and the feedback were very valuable in identifying ways to make the experience better. My understanding is that Virtual True Dungeon during Gen Con weekend will be a completely different adventure from what the Patrons saw. Jeff can design puzzles and the entire adventure to better work on the virtual platform.

After your adventure was over we put you into a Breakout Room with the entire party. Future VTD events will have the Epilogue Room there, and data will be recorded like it would for the standard Epilogue Room. That will give us the ability to send any treasure, participation tokens, survivor buttons, random swag, etc that you got for the run. People will have the option of having those items mailed or not, and will have a ticket price differential to cover the shipping of said items. Domestic shipping only.

Interaction is GREAT! It was really neat for Jeff and I to see everyone so happy to "see" one another and be able to game together. I kept my computer on the entire time and muted myself and stopped my video feed. It was something I guess I expected, but didn't realize how MUCH people would enjoy seeing their gaming friends and playing TD again. That was cool.

Today we are shipping out the swag to anyone that played this weekend. Then we start planning and working out details for the next VTD. We each have things to work out to make the whole thing work, so please bear with us and know that we are trying to make this a great experience for everyone until we can all gather in person once again!

Glad things went well.

Hoping we can do virtual TD for Pax West and GHC. If its just one Dungeon and you can leave it set up for a couple months (I don't ask much, do I?), then it would simplify preparation greatly.

I'm up for volunteering in any way needed.

Brad - I'm sure if we ran into problems of International demand, someone (Kirk? Trent?) could do a service (for a fee) where your tokens are shipped to them, then they ship to you.

If a group of us are running together, can all the tokens & buttons & stuff be mailed to one address (if everyone agrees of course) instead of everyone having to get individual shipments?

I have zero issues with getting tokens shipped to me for someone overseas and then facilitating the tokens getting to them in some way. Just let me know if you need this.

Not sure how or what type of volunteer would be needed but always glad to give a hand if someone thinks i could be of use. Wouldn't mind an excuse to drive out just to escape Amish country either.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

I've mailed to Brad before in Australia, as well as others in the UK, and incredibly and unbelievably, even to Canada (OMG wut the wut!?!) before. I'd be glad to help, and no need for a fee. I'm happy to help people get moar tokens!
