TOPIC: DM question (spoiler)

DM question (spoiler) 5 years 5 months ago #1

I was wondering what most DMs would do in this situation. At gamehole con yesterdayon our second run of odin’s a few of usHad this idea to sneak over to the sleeping giants and place our tokens on the slider board on wear we wanted to hit him. Figuring we would get the jump on him, the dm did not allow this and just started the combat.
I was a little disappointed because I heard that a lot of DMs play along with situations like this.

Was just curious thanks

The giants were asleep, not passed out. The reality of what you are looking to do, would be to sneak up and place your weapons on vital spots on the giants without them waking up, while you are clanking about in armor.

At best, I might let you get initiative, but not place your sliders. I suspect that is the way the room description is written.

DMs are asked to keep things consistent and to stick to the script (but likely not said quite that way). This room was designed to work a very specific way. That said there is some room for creative solutions and when a group comes up with one, DMs are asked to pass this info along to future DMs so that the room can stay consistent.
For example if you used some old scroll from many years ago to do something that had not been taken into account a DM would be forced to wing it and do what that person thought was fair and made since.

So the DM needs to think about weather or not this will change the mechanic of the room? In this case wouldn’t it just have started the giant with a little less HP?

What if they were using the death flail?

I think we were given a surprise round. That might have been on normal difficulty.

I think everyone pretty much was given a surprise round, whether you decided to attack the giants or free Flaxon.

If I were a DM I would still say you have to slide, because just because you have surprised the giants in their slumber doesn't mean you are guaranteed to hit them. If it were D&D you would still need to roll a D20 (but probably at advantage).

I was the DM and I love creative solutions. Normally I am a True Grind DM and pretty much am allowed unlimited flexibility in situations like this if it were to happen in True Grind. But in the dungeon we are asked to "stick to the script" as closely as possible, for better or worse. Obviously the goal is consistency.

In your case I was tempted to allow it, but also had to consider the "spirit" of the room.

There were three or four parties that came up with a creative solution that I did allow, and I let the AC (also Steve!) know about:

I totally forgot my old scrolls of knock at home. But I was hoping to try to knock open the cell and thus skip the two rounds required to spend not in combat. Would that have worked?

At Gen Con I tried to kill the prisoner so they wouldn't make any noise. I was of course the rogue at the time.

I had no idea that token even exists, now I want some.

If I was the DM I would have let it work for bypassing the delay.

I remember someone actually telling me at Gencon that a previous N2 party used a knock scroll and just bypassed the room without a fight...so it definitely was already allowed!
