TOPIC: Themed runs

Themed runs 5 years 6 months ago #1

Trying to think of themed run options and would like to know what others have done and their experience with them. I'll keep a running list:

1. 5 person double down (ghost 5 slots)
2. Green with envy (assuming all uncommon?)
3. Limit X UR and above (each person can only use X or less high tiered tokens)
4. Unique uniques (only one of any token can be used in the entire party)
5. Cabal party (5 people, all wearing cabal items, ghost the other 5)

Others? Thoughts on these?

Other runs I have seen or will see at GHC

1. Bloody nightmare: all reds, except TE

2. 7 token challenge: each player gets 7 tokens, including TE, done as a first run only.

3. Greedy Sealed: sealed pack with TE

4. Turkey Leg: only turkey legs for melee weapons

5. 100 HP: all characters must have at least 100 HP base

6. Ro7P run: All players use their Ro7P voucher to play an alternate class.

All of these sound like a great way to give yourself some challenge on a run you may already know, or a LOT of a challenge on one you don't.

I haven't tried them all myself, but I am sure I will eventually.

If I were rich, I'd want to do a zombie run for fun. Go in zombie make-up, and when you go in a room, don't do anything but lurch around and moan - really freak the DMs out!

Other themes of which I have heard:

All daggers (and a club for the cleric)
solo runs
all volunteer
continuous party runs (same group of players does the modules in order with the same characters, with effects from first dungeon [spells cast, HP, etc.] carrying over)

Along the "if I were rich" line of thinking, you could do a bodyguard run. A 2-person or 3-person run where one is an unequipped non-combatant that you have to protect.

I'd have fun creating a character for a theme run where all tokens must have some kind of negative effect or be a TE. I think most slots have at least 1, if not multiple, items that have a negative effect. Weapon might be the biggest hurdle, as I can't think of any weapons with a penalty for equipping them.

I'd be down for a wizard's run. Or a magic users only run? Everyone must rely on casting over physical combat where or when possible.

One I'm contemplating for next year.

7 Dwarfs.

All tokens, with the exception of Treasure Enhancing tokens, must have Dwarf, Dwarven, or Gem in their name. Classes available exclude Elf Wizard (duh), Druid, Monk, Wizard, and Ranger.

(Excluded classes can be ghosted for Treasure gathering purposes. What Dwarf would leave treasure on the table?

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

How does the turkey leg melee weapon work? The DB lists it as a slotless.

It was treated as an improvised melee weapon.

One of my players just asked:

"If they allow turkey legs as a weapon, can I use a 25,000 GP eldrich bar? It better do Eldrich damage..."

Not that he has a 25k bar, mind you, but I found it amusing.
