TOPIC: Newb saves the day!

Newb saves the day! 5 years 8 months ago #1

I have to tell the story of the newb that saved a total party kill (TPK)!

Smakdown and I was sitting down just killing the time as we were waiting for our next run. Most of you may know I am a sucker, I mean nice guy, who likes to give new players the experience of their first True Dungeon run. While we sat there talking a complete random person ask to sit with us. Sure you can sit here! Smakdown and I continued to discuss our last run – failed a puzzle – ARGH!

Well the guy asked about our tokens and why they were orange, green, etc., you get the point. We explain the colors of the tokens, to include how to tell common, uncommon, and rare from UR. He mention he has been trying to find a TD adventure to go on but has had no luck finding a slot. I look at Smakdown, he nods yes, I offer him to go on a run with us that was starting in 20 minutes on Nightmare. The guy gets excited and says sign me up! That makes two new players on a Nightmare run! WOOT!

We tell him we love combat and puzzles are just a room that lets us catch our breath before the next fight. And he states “I love puzzles!”

This was our first run through N1 Astral Bliss, but no worry, we told him we won’t let you die. So think about an online MMO – level 80 party picks up this level 10 guy with a wooden short sword to take on the fire breathing dragon. So piece of cake, have the new guy charged the dragon, dies, and we kill the dragon!
Well here we are starting the dungeon and the first puzzle room the guy solves it solo and we follow his instructions – solved with time to spare!

Fast forward to final room the Bridge!

Since we never been to the room we were trying to figure out the pattern. First person steps on the wrong floor light, two guy that are color blind blow it (no glasses were available), the next people fail the floor etc. Well the newb goes, with our only player that has not died giving instructions, which he gave instructions to everyone else that died. The new guy makes it to the center and we are all saying this will be our first TPK in close to a decade. While we are talking, to our surprise, we watched him dance across the lighted disco floor and he is the only person to complete the floor! Everyone cheers!!

The level 10 with a wooden short sword used the level 80’s to distract the dragon so he can get the solo kill!

He is now hooked on TD! He is going to try to make TD every year with our group! He was one of the nine new people we (Smakdown and I) took through TD this year. Every new person we took this year is hooked and wants to play TD – that is what our group is all about, getting more people addicted to TD!

Thank you newbie (Randy)!
Cheers,
Ed, Jeff, and crew!

That was very kind of you and you to bring someone new on. I am glad that a memory was created out of that. As a new player myself, I was blown away by the community and helpfulness of the veterans.

That's really awesome, the True Dungeon community never ceases to amaze me. Memories like this is what keeps True Dungeon alive, introducing new players to the game and keeping the veterans coming back for more.

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

I've been on several runs where newbies ace the puzzles.

Sometimes we veterans overthink things.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Jeff has trained us to overthink things.

Which is definitely bad in some cases:
