TOPIC: The True Dungeon "bug"

The True Dungeon "bug" 5 years 8 months ago #1

Finally got to try out TD at GenCon this year and I have to say I'm now an official addict. Played N-2 & N-3 and thought the story, puzzles and especially the NPC's were fantastic, especially the Valkyrie and Ice Troll.

Encountered a bit of nerd snobbery/ geek "l33t" attitude toward new players my first run (N-2). Our group was a random collection of folks and consisted of 5 brand new players (myself included) and the rest experienced. Did a normal run and 7 out of 10 party members were dead by the 2nd to last room. There was a lot of grumbling about "noob players" being under geared, "worst run ever" comments, etc... To be fair, the most experienced guy in the group (fighter) was the nicest and most helpful player you could ask for but could not carry 9 other people through the session (nor should he have been expected to). I didn't attribute any negative experience to the TD community, just to people being people.

Second session (N-3) was insanely fun. Mostly experienced folks who were all about having the max fun possible and making sure the three noobies (i.e. me and two others) did too. Bard sang every room, everything from "Sweet Caroline" to the "Greatest American Hero" theme song. By third room the whole party was singing along. The group let new guys take first crack on monsters and puzzles. There was an endless stream of friendly advice and general goofing around. Every successful fight and solved puzzle resulted in a group wide, top of the lungs cheer.

Basically this is a long post to say I had a great time and have been bitten by the TD bug. Can't wait until next year, and really wish there was a place to play every weekend lol.

Glad you had enjoyed True Dungeon and are excited to play again.

TD is at 3 other conventions, as well as Gen Con. Gamehole Con is our next con, coming up November 8th - 11th. Feel free to check out True Dungeon at other cons and welcome to our world!

Quite. I often say: I have more fun volunteering than in half the non-TD events I pay to play. They’re a great group of people.

Welcome to the form and the game, sorry to hear you had some issues with your first run but glad to hear your taking it in stride. For the most part the TD community is the nicest group of people you will ever meet, even if there are a few folks who get a little over excited...

That 2nd run sounds like a great time.

I don't think any player should complain about under-geared players - especially in a Normal run - if they aren't prepared to offer to "dress" their cohorts. The only guarantee, unless you bring your own team, is that each player gets 10 tokens and 12 minutes of training.

Personally, I did 2 runs, (my 2nd and 3rd full runs ever), was generously loaned a treasure enhancer, and in turn sold one Defender set, loaned out another, along with a handful of Ioun Stones, earcuffs, and assorted other gear to the newbs on our teams so we could do one run Hardcore and the other was either Normal or Hardcore, and we all made it to room 7s.
I came here to sing and collect tokens, and I'm alllll out of money.
