I’m new to the system, but interested in volunteering for Origins. I’m making my way through the Dungeon Master’s Guide. At the end it makes mentions of tests I can find here in the forums. While I’m not quite sure I need to step into that role quite yet, I was wondering if anyone could point me to where these tests are kept.

Joshua, the test links are given after you're accepted and before con starts. Long as you have the DM and coaches guide you'll be fine. If you have any specific questions or confusion please ask, enough of us coaches and DM's are on the forums.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Thank you for filling me in, Matt. I’m planning on finishing up my volunteer profile tonight and getting signed up for Origins. Hopefully that goes well and I can look into more events in the future. I’m interested in seeing how things are set up and ran.

Edit: Fingers crossed. I’ve submitted an application for Origins. I’ll keep an eye out for a response.

Please excuse me for posting twice in a row, I’m afraid a simple edit will be overlooked.

I’ve put forth an application to volunteer for Origins as a assistant coach, puzzle DM, and/or customer service. I realize my lack of playing the game limits me from particular rolls, but I was wondering if There would be any issue with me putting forth an application for Gen Con now and then perhaps updating my preferred roles after Origins should I meet the requirements for other roles.

Currently I’m waiting to hear back on my application to Origins, but I hope to volunteer for Gen Con as well this year.

You can always request something and you never know what TDs needs are at the time.
Good luck we all appreciate the help.

Also sometimes it takes a while for TD to notify volunteers of the status. There are many and multiple factors going in the decision as to what the need for volunteers is.

The format change at GenCon likely means fewer coaches and DMs will be needed. But apply away. You never know.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

It makes sense to take note of what resources you have and which best fit the bill. I was considering the fact that I could possibly hit Player Level 2 during Origins which would open up additional roles I could step into. While I definitely understand having experienced volunteers take those roles before an inexperienced volunteer, it does not hurt to put forth the interest. Hopefully they will consider me for other roles as well should I not fit into the ones I showed interest in. I’m pretty happy stepping into a number of roles, I just don’t know that I am quite ready for some.

Harlax, that’s a good point. It’s unfortunate to see that the number of scenarios are being downsized, but great to hear that they are doing it to focus on further deepening the immersion level.

I think the charm is for next convention year, so I’m pretty sure it is gencon since origins is the end of the con year.

So I signed up for this first time, to volunteer at Gen Con. Not first time player but first time to volunteer and I was wondering if I do get selected to volunteer, when I should expect to receive an email informing me of my schedule. I was wanting to firm up my travel plans to Gen Con soon. Thanks for the help as I didn't see any type of volunteer forum to get answers to my questions.

Typically you’ll be notified earlier and then later on you’ll get your actual schedule they haven’t even done the schedules for origins as far as I know so you may just want to make your travel arrangements and assume that you’re going to be accepted as a volunteer. If for some strange reason you’re not selected as a volunteer you’ll still have your cheap flight arrangements.
