TOPIC: AnyTraining Changes This Year?

AnyTraining Changes This Year? 6 years 10 months ago #1

Had two horrible experiences in a row last two years so I was just wondering if anyone has seen anything about training or setup for volunteers. Last two Gen Cons we were unlucky to have a few folks that barely knew the rooms and could not adapt to situations like sound props not working, so we failed and moved through - and last year got a I succeeded button anyway..

Probably a no for me this year but just curious if there has been anything worth nothing to help those who are judging/facilitating the rooms.

Thanks.

That's unfortunate. I'm sure TPTB would like to hear more details. If none have reached out to you yet, someone probably will.

Each DM is provided with the information on their room weeks in advance, and they are supposed to review the module, ask questions if they don't understand, and try to flush out corner cases or strange token interactions that might come into play, so they rulings can be made ahead of time.

They're also provided with radios to cry out for help if something comes up or goes wrong.

But all that has been true for years. Sadly, not everyone does their homework or uses the tools that are provided.

Another problem is that sometimes people get switched around last minute. Illness, emergencies, and hangovers happen, so the DM in the room may have never seen the module, through no fault of theirs. I once stepped in to DM a room, not having played it and having had 5 minutes to read the module before the first party walked in. I wasn't at the top of my game, to say the least, but things got better.

I too am really sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience multiple years. I'm not a dm with TD but I know we try very hard to make the customer experience the best it can be. Sadly, there are times when we fail at that. I hope perhaps at some point you can give True Dungeon another chance.

I appreciate the concern from you both but since this was last year I'm not at all emotional and just want to see if this is really just a really bad coincidence. It seems like you believe so but I was hoping for some feedback. Last year I had low health from fighting (i was an unlucky pick by the DM to be attacked twice) and we were told at the end of two rooms that we could not heal. The encounters seemingly took place as soon as we entered and no chance to heal while leaving.

In past years I have always seen people healed between rooms and thought that was allowed. The fact that I got killed because the GM was told twice in one room and then not again by the healer that I needed help was frustrating. Being told no healing between seemed odd. Add in players that forgot to say something after reminding them made for a bad experience.

The prop issues two years ago might have been worse. Talking mushrooms that never did and we asked for help but the GM just shrugged. If it were me I would go read what each said to each player knowing the room was failing. Or perhaps give a by on lost health.
But there were other things and it really felt like we were shoved through without regard

If you have questions about rules or how things are being handled, you may ask to speak with an "AC" - Adventure Coordinator - they are there to try to achieve a consistent and positive experience.

With regard to the rules, True Dungeon is based on D&D. For timing rules in combat.

a. No actions of any kind (including healing can happen between rooms.

b. Within combat, things happen in rounds, during each round players get one standard and one free action.

c. Outside of combat, generally people can do whatever actions they like in any order with regard to healing (e.g. you can hand the DM 10 healing potions, which would take you 10 rounds to drink in combat).

It's possible one or both DMs was doing the wrong thing by not letting you heal within their rooms.

If the two rooms you mentioned were back to back combat rooms, and the party didn't defeat the first monster before time ran out, and the module design called for an ambush with no actions first in the next room, then the scenario you described with healing _could_ have been correct according to the rules.

Healers can heal in combat though, they just get 1 standard action per round like everyone else - so if they are sliding their puck to attack they can't heal.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify everything. I guess I did know between rooms and tried for right before we left - I recall being rushed to the next room due to time and trying to get healing and was told no time. Bad situations perhaps. Will have to think about trying my luck.
