TOPIC: Should Ghost Players be allowed at Origins?

Should Ghost Players be allowed at Origins? 6 years 10 months ago #1

I thought this deserved it's own post, since it's more urgent (Origins is next month).

Origins has far fewer tickets than GENCON, just 35 runs per day, giving a total of 1050 tickets. That's not too many for a convention the size of Origins.

Plus, the ticket price is just $42. If a 6th Level person buys out a run and has 10 CoA and 10 ISSN, they would get 181 tokens, which is just $2.32 per treasure pull. Plus you get 10 sealed packs and 10 each of the Normal and Hardcore/Nightmare Completion Tokens. That would make it very potentially profitable for people to buy out a bunch of runs and make a bunch of profit. Which would leave a lot less tickets available for actual players, many of whom would likely be new to True Dungeon.

It would be even more profitable if Ghost Players get the advantage of the 6th level bonus (190 Treasure Coins for the run instead of 181). Do they? I'd have assumed they didn't, but I think someone said in the discussion threads that they do.

I'd recommend Origins have the same Ghost Player rules that TDC had.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike I think you should phrase your question differently. Should ghost get full, partial or any treasure at Orgins not if they should be allowed.

To answer your question just as it stands I will say YES!.

What amount of treasure should ghost get if any, I feel a more accurate debate.

I am willing to bet though that Thursday will have LOTS of unsold tickets. Friday a few as well. This is what we have seen the first year at WYC and GHC.

There's actually 210 runs, 2100 tickets. Did you miss a dungeon? :)

But currently the rule is that ghosts are allowed, so if something is going to be announced to the contrary I would hope it would be before tickets go on sale Wednesday.
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Note: I am not planning to attend Origins this year.

My initial inclination is that no, ghost players should not be allowed at Origins:

1. There are fewer total tickets available.

2. Presumably, having TD at Origins is partly intended to reach out to a new player base. In that situation you really want more new players to have access to it.

However, I do think that some form of ghosting should be allowed at GenCon. (There needs to be some balance between ghosting versus mule'ing).

With the scarcity of tickets at Gen Con I actually think if we to pick a place to eliminate ghosts it should be there verse the satellite cons. I also think doing prestige runs makes more sense at those cons.

This has nothing to do with tokens though and just tickets. We don't know yet what kind of demand of tickets there will be at Origins. I think setting a limit on them is premature.

Again if you want to talk about limiting treasure on ghost that is different whether at GC or Origins and other cons.

Because of the discounted ticket price (vs GenCon) I think it's the perfect place to implement and test out the "two box solution."

Don't regulate or eliminate ghosting, just make sure it isn't crazy profitable.

I'd agree with that, as long as you mean ghost players couldn't get loot (or could only get a significantly reduced amount of loot), but otherwise people could have ghost players.

If 10 players bought an average of 5 runs each for treasure farming with ghost players, that would be 25% of the total amount of tickets. That amount wouldn't surprise me at all.

I suspect, since Jeff seems reluctant to dilute the treasure, that the "two box solution" is more of a last resort than a first one. But I could be wrong.

How is 50 runs 25% of 800? Unless you mean Origins but then Incognito did say ghost should be allowed ar Irigins so I am just confused.

I was referring to Origins. Although I also think ghosting for loot shouldn't be allowed at GENCON, because I think it will be a total sellout regardless, and fewer ghost players means more real players (many of whom may be new).

The thing I always see missing is considering of how much of the event ticket cost covers the cost of hosting the TD run in the first place.

I suspect GenCon is far more costly than Origins or GHC to run an event at including the cost for hotel space, etc.

I suspect the cost is also related to not have a puzzle and combat version of each event also.
