Just couldn't figure out how this high bid situation occurred:
11x 2020 3x Treasure chip : $9.25 - Starlord
5x 2020 3x Treasure chip : $13.00 - Starlord

But I will move on.

Thought it was obvious but I guess not everyone thinks so.

I bid $9.00 on all treasure tokens.

Starlord bid on all 16x treasure tokens at a price greater than $13 beating my bid at $9 so he is winning at the next bid increment.

Someone thenafter (before my update) bid at $13 for only 5 treasure tokens. Since winning bid is second highest bid, that is what you see.
Each token is a separate item thus it does not make ethical sense to say all 16x treasure tokens need to be raised to $13.

Hopefully this makes more sense to all.

But wouldnt the $13 losing bid just try bidding on another 5 if they didnt win the first 5? So long as they arent winning 5 and there are still any below $13, they should keep bidding. I understand that you are trying to say that you have already applied their 5 bids, but if i ambthat person and see this situation, my next PM will be to increase my bid to $13 on TEN of them, knowing that 5 of those bids have already lost. And then repeat that until i bid on all of them.

Yes, you do have a point there. For trade goods, there wasn't as much exchanging of hands so people can bid multiple times (like a couple of bidders i had) to force out someone else's max bid. Also one can have different bid max on a different quantities on the same item (most people didn't rather).

For PYPs where there are multiple bidders with different maximum bids and many different current winners, it doesn't make sense to increase the price of all PYP just because one PYP got out bid to a higher amount.

Overall, I will re-evaluate my stance after this auction. I may or may not switch it up when/if i run another auction in the future.

I strongly agree that a bid for a single pyp shouldn’t raise the price on all the pyps. Definitely worth a discussion.

Endgame usually we agree when it comes to math but the streak had to come to an end.
I do think that the bid on one should raise everything because think if I was a bidder and just did this the long way and bid up the price on a single item by one increment. When I don’t win I can do the same thing but since the one that I previously bid on is higher now it goes to the next lowest. I feel this is what should happen when I just bid a higher max bid it just automatically does it to save everyone time.

Imagine I’m winning 100 Darkwood plank at 0.50, with a max bid of 1.00.

Now someone bids 1.25 on 5 plank.

It is in my best interest to cede 5 plank to the new bidder over increasing what I would pay with 95 plank at $1.

Since the new bidder only bid on 5, and will pay 1.25 (assuming .25 bid increment) all you have done is increase what I need to pay.

The bidder can work around this by making 3 or 4 bids on the same item - 25 at .50, 50 at .75, and 25 at one dollar, but this kind of bidding makes the auction more complex for the seller.

The complexity can be avoided just by having the bids be 5@1.25 and 95 at 0.50

I I was a bidder at a live auction in real tome I would bid .75 on the 5 and see my results and since these are silent auctions I don’t know that the same person is going for all of them I would then bid .75 on another set of 5. So on and so fourth.
I’m not saying that it’s not easier to do it the other way and I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be cheeper for you to concede the 5 out of the 100 but I didn’t bid 1$ on 5 I bid .75 on 5 first and until that increment isn’t able to be satisfied then I bid 1$ until that can’t be satisfied until finally I bid 1.25 which is able to be satisfied giving you 95 at 1$ and me 5 at 1$

Perhaps a better example in this case would really just be bidding .75 and seeing only 5 go up to .75 and the auction ends. Now that person sees 5 at .75 and the other 95 at .50, now I would think to me self wtf I was willing to pay 75$ why didn’t I win my 5?

My search fu is weak, but this exact discussion was had about 4 months ago.

Ultimately it comes down to a debate of explicitly following the instructions and keeping bidding until no one outbids someone else vs making sure all winners pay the same, deciding tiebreakers based on order of qualifying bid.

Also, in my opinion it is NOT reasonable to ask the auctioneer to assume, person A bid $1 on 100, but I'm sure they'd rather have 95 of the 100 they wanted at $0.50 apiece. What if the person would have rather had 100 at $1 apiece, like they asked for?

I think the scenario being discussed here is different then the batch discussed in the other thread, but I didn’t keep up with all the nuance there.

None the less, my new strategy is going to be putting 4 bids in at different prices to prevent the scenario described above - it happened To me bidding a flat price for a whole group, and cost me $40 or $50 extra on the last bid of an auction.

I think that's reasonable. Knowing exactly how bids will process is a reasonable thing.

It's also fair to ask whether one will be able to outbid oneself or not (I hope not).

Now that is an interesting question that I don’t know if I ever saw but I would agree that you shouldn’t be able to bid against yourself
