TOPIC: GenCon Housing - Anyone in yet?

Maybe this will entice more people to go to full time volunteer status, to get an attached room? Even if you don't spend every night there, you can at least take a break during the day, stash stuff, and crash if you're working late.

-Adam, upto end of prereg you can request direct refund of badge. I'd wait a few days then email and make sure to tell them why. I got airport which sucks as I'm volunteer (part time). Friends of mine got 1 room downtown. I'm to the point if its not dowtown and i play TD its not worth going. Hope the whosyercon trial goes well and TD considers does a move to Origins.

Mostly I was just blowing off steam.....managed to find the Residence Inn relatively close to the convention center that has rooms available. I'm happy since I made a 2k order this year and it would of been wasted. Being that this is my vacation for the year I don't want to spend the whole time as a volunteer and with my fiancee it would make for an awkward rooming situation in the volunteer housing block. Do they ever set volunteers up in rooms that accommodate couples.....as this would greatly influence wether this is an option for the future.

I should luck out due to seniority inside my group, 1 'downtown' hotel and the 1 i got at airport. Its just if i don't either I don't go or be fortunate enough to work for somebody to provide a room.

David Gerspach wrote: San Diego's housing problems might be worse. The housing block is around $300 a night downtown and if you book outside the block it's $700 a night and some people are willing to pay it.

Hotel Registration is first come first served, but if filling out the 6 page form takes more than a minute and a half you wont' be getting a room downtown. All hotels sell out in a matter of about 5-10 minutes and that's not just downtown.

Also, if you haven't gone the previous year, chances of going are around 10%, as their badge registration process is random and around 10x the number of people want to go as they can accommodate. Of course, once you do go, you're sort of trapped as previous years attendees are eligible for preregistration where you have a little better than 50/50 chance of getting a badge. No one wants to give up that advantage. But previous year's attendees are given no advantage when it comes to hotels.

All that said, if you do manage to get badges and a hotel it's one of the most awesome cons to experience. Just totally different from Gen con.

I am really upset about SDCC - I was eligible for pre-registration, but was not able to - why have "pre-registration" if you don't allow people who are eligible to pre-register?m I was the only person among the SoCal people I know who attend SDCC that did not make it. I will try again during regular registration, but I know that the odds for that will be really bad. This means I will lose the chance to pre-register next year.

I remember the goo old days when you could buy your pass for the next year at SDCC itself.

Last year I made it really early one day and was very close to the front of the line - it was absolutely glorious for about 30 minutes.

I used to get a room thru the SDCC system, but I stopped and would get a far cheaper room at a Motel 6 that was pretty far away, but I would use San Diego's awesome Metro system.

If you didn't a room downtown in the block, please contact the local hotels and see if they have rooms. I would be willing to bet you can find a room downtown, but will have to pay more money.
