TOPIC: Raising Funds to Preserve JimC’s Legacy

I was not remotely close to jim, but if it was my tokens, I would want my family to have money for them and not just give them away

I would say that anyone trying to turn tragedy into an opportunity to profit should be ashamed, if I thought they could actually feel shame.

I could easily see how those tokens would walk away if that group disbanded or had a schism though. Then his family is left with nothing.

You guys make some excellent points, especially EN 429. I definitely agree that the family (Jim's parents) should be taken care of.

Perhaps I was just a tad bit too idealistic with my original hopes. I guess I ended up presenting a (false) dichotomy where preserving JimC's legacy and his family getting money were two mutually exclusive events.

Based on EN 429 valuable insights, maybe the best option would be to try and raise money so that the Friends of JimC could make a competitive bid (and if they win, then preserve JimC's legacy).

For those who are concerned about JimC's family, this would up the amount that they would receive (regardless of who won).

And even if we cannot match the other bidder(s), at least we can cut into their profit margins so that they are not profiting as much from JimC's death (and that cut would go directly to the family due to the higher price).

So now it wouldn't be an issue of whether or not JimC's family gets money or not. But whether friends of JimC who want to preserve his memory can triumph over those trying to make a killing by graverobbing his corpse.

Unfortunately, we only have a few days.

But if anyone is interested in contributing to an effort to raise funds and preserve JimC's legacy (both of which would benefit his family), please contact me privately.

still new to the site but not the game..not trying to make an enemy here, but isn't graverobbing getting stuff for free?..which you and the group were trying to do?
at least this person was trying to buy them(now I see you are too)
maybe that should have been your groups thought the whole time...trying to purchase them.

Eric, if you aren't able to raise enough money to be the high bidder, perhaps an option is to bid above your funds limit to be the high bidder, and then sell enough of the tokens to make up the difference, if the family is willing to get some money up front and the rest in a month or two.

I have a hunch Jim's token collection is big enough that you could sell enough to raise the additional money and still have plenty to put in a trust to outfit his group in perpetuity. That way the family gets money and his group is outfitted for runs. That probably wouldn't negatively impact his group at all, because Jim probably has far more tokens than a group could ever outfit at one time.

I seriously doubt that any asshole who would contact the bereaved's family to try to profit off of their misfortune is going to make a fair offer. Chances are, someone thought they could snipe this for pennies on the dollar and cash in. I'm sure eventually we'll find out who the #%^& this is and they'll get what's coming to them. As for donating to try to follow through on Jim's wishes, I'm in. I dunno how we're going to do the logistics but hopefully some of Jim's friends from this community will pitch in and the NASCRAG people too.

This guy supported TD for !#%&ing years. Probably the only person who spent more on tokens was Smakdown and even then they were probably neck and neck. He deserves to have something better than some mercenary !%^% liquidate his collection after paying pennies for it. I said this when I first found out that Jim had passed but we really should have some sort of memorial TD run or _something_ to remember Jim by. Whether you realize it or not and whether you had any interaction with him personally...he helped each and every person who has ever attended the event with his support. I'm not usually a really sentimental person but we owe him something IMO. More than this bullshit anyway.

Yeah, I have no idea who you are but fuck you and the donkey you rode in on. Before this shit blew up into some lets make a deal clownshoes shit, Jim's will said he wanted his tokens to go to his best friend and then preserved so that his nascrag friends could use them and have their event at gencon each year. Besides following his wishes, the entire idea from what I heard was NOT to sell them and profit from it. Now, I don't know why Jim's will wasn't followed or the background story for how this turned into bullshit, but if it's because some asshole tried to make a quick buck on it it woudln't !#%^ing surprise me the way this is going.

Okay. That was probably a bit harsh of me. I'm going to take a few deep breaths here and hope that we can sort all of this out. Maybe get this vein in my forehead to stop throbbing.

I think everyone gets heated with anything involving a friend (when we feel they are being done wrong)... especially in that friends passing.
I think we should hold judgement on this. Nobody knows what offers were made or if the family will even accept... also the only ones that know the terms of a possible offer(s) are the family and those involved. We are assuming the worst of people when that is not always the case (I know rose colored glasses, but we need to take a breath).

Just trying to understand what's going on here... Jim C passed away and so now his family owns his tokens. But his friends would use the tokens each year. So you are trying to raise money so his friends can buy the tokens from his family?
