TOPIC: Thirst and dealing poison damage big in 2014?

Thirst and dealing poison damage big in 2014? 9 years 9 months ago #1

Based on the 2014 token set, it seems it might be possible to get a bit thirsty. Sure I have the Waterskin but it isn't clear whether or not I was smart enough to put any water in it before stepping into the desert.

I'm really debating between wearing the Ring of Quenching or Ring of Protection +4... thoughts?

Likewise, there are a lot of tokens this year that specifically deal poison damage. There is also the change to the party card that indicates damage types dealt. I wonder if there will be some creatures that can only be damaged by poison damage this year?

Ring of Protection +4. I am imagining only 1 room that you have to deal with thirst. RoP+4 is usable in all combat rooms. Now poison damage I could see in multiple combat rooms being dealt. I imagine it is more likely that a creature is immune to poison than only poison damages it. That would be way too restrictive.

Perhaps I use Ring of Quenching for puzzle runs (in case thirst is part of a puzzle?) and Ring of Protection +4 for combat runs...

I have no doubt that items like the Ring of Quenching were put in place as a work-around for some challenge we will face. But consider a party of new players going into the dungeon with their 10-pack of tokens. Odds are good that they won't all have Rings of Quenching. The dungeon won't be designed in such a way that you need the Ring of Quenching or you're screwed. It will have some minor effect, which may or may not be relevant.

During Realm of the Sea Lich, we had to adventure underwater. Tokens like Bottle of Bubbles could provide air to breathe, OR you could stand in the "Air bubble" corner of a room, to get a breath of air. In combat, if you didn't have a way to breath, you had to skip every other round to go to the air bubble for a breath.

Not all the rooms were underwater, though, and there were other way (token related, or touching the giant pearl) which would also let you circumvent the lack-of-air problem.

I guess what I'm saying is: If the Ring of Quenching is a Common, then it's a solution to a common or "nuisance" problem. It won't feature prominently in the adventure, the penalty for not having it will be quite minor, and people who use their brains will be able to figure out some way to do without it in a given room.

Go with the Ring of Protection.

And in a Puzzle run you are still likely to have 2 or 3 combat rooms. Though you may not get targeted by the creature RoP+4 is more likely useful than the Ring of Quenching which again is only likely useful in 1 room.

For Quenching Thirst – if you have a water skin and some type of heat protection,, wouldn’t this help from becoming thirsty.

For poisoning, there are a lot of scrolls, potions, and plant items that can have you do a reroll save or remove it all together. I did talk to my group yesterday on the scenario that you don’t get a chance to apply something to remove the poison, then all that I can think of that is left is the medallion of Greyhawk?

What about constriction, I worry about that one. Someone gets constricted thus taking damage every round. You have to fight the creature to set your buddy free, thus every miss is a hit and more damge to your buddy.

I consider myself well prepared and I'm making no changes to my gear lineup based on environmental effects for this year.

Will there be some minor inconvience in 1 room that Might make a different token worth it? sure but I suspect it won't really matter. All previous years it was made a big deal about but this year not so much so its going to be considerably downplayed.

As to the poison issue and the damage type tracking.
Don't worry about a monster needing to be hit by a specific type. There are some monsters that take more damage and some that take less damage from various types of damage. Poison is the most commonly resisted/immune type for monsters. It would be highly unlikely to find a monster that is vulnerable to poison, let alone one that is only damaged by poison. That is somewhat obsurd. In TD there is always another way.

To be more specific the damage icons is something we came up with to help make coaching more efficent. My original proposal didn't even have poison on it because it was super rare before this year. This all started from my desire to write less words on the cards. Fire and Frost can oddly looks similar if you write them small enough and read them in the dark. Sacred and Sonic the same. Abreviations likwise don't work. We decided on Icons. Even when small are visably identifiable, its neat.

Long story short. Don't associate the change in the party card with anything planned for the dungeon. I started it before we even knew the token set for this year and I knew nothing about the dungeon.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
