TOPIC: Grind?

Re: Grind? 9 years 10 months ago #25

I suspect a mighty sling would be helpful but i'd have to look at your final strength. Possibly bring along a stack of compound weapons you can use as thrown. If you do this you'll want a stack of like 15 because you can't pick up in the fight and if you could it would take a round of action which is painful to lose.

I don't have the Mighty sling. I probably have a stack of compound weapons I can use. I will look.

I was looking through the TD site and saw that this Grind rule "You MUST be a Second Level TD player to participate" I have a friend joining me that has never played before is awesome. What options do I have?

If your friend is doing a regular run before Grind, said friend will be level 2 by the time you get there.

I asked Incognito (Master of Grind) about that before my first year. Basically, that's more about making sure people are prepared and know it's not an introductory event than forcibly excluding anyone. They're not going to check or anything.

With regular runs there is a training area explaining how it all works with a DM and additional time set aside as part of the run.
Grind doesn't have this. So a new player would have no idea how combat worked until they got thrust into it.

Its a great way to get non-expirenced people not to think its some "light/lite" or entry version of True Dungeon.

I strongly suggest that your friend attend a TD101 seminar, or that you spend some time explaining to him how TD works (especially combat).

The main issue is that Grind is very fast-paced and there really isn't time for the DM's to be explaining the basics to a newbie (and it wouldn't be fair to the other players).

Unfortunately, there is no real way to enforce the Level 2 restriction. Someday, if GenCon or Jeff provide the tools to do so, we might.

So it's not as if we're going to police things and turn you away if you are new. The main issue is that newbies doing Grind are going to be in a "sink or swim" situation. They will need to learn fast!

I've been hesitant to start another "dumb newbie question" thread since I have done a few already, but can anybody help me understand why True Grind is so popular? If I understand correctly it is just combat with little or no experience or treasure gained. Is it just fun?

It's fun... just trying to survive. It reminds me of playing a Tabletop RPG... needs more imagination and good DMs. You can't just rely on the beautiful sets.
