TOPIC: Quick rules clarification please

Edit: I just found the answers to my questions in the DMG. Nevermind. But in case anyone may find it useful, here are what my questions were, along with the answers. If my interpretation of the DMG is incorrect, please let me know.


Question:What takes effect first: fractional/percentile damage reduction, or points of damage reduction?

For example, let's say you're wearing a Ring of Iuz (1/2 damage from undead physical attacks), and also have a Ruby Prism and Silverweave Shirt (each of which reduces melee damage you take by 1). If a ghoul claws you for 12 damage, do you wind up losing 4 hp (half damage, followed by 2 pt reduction) or would you lose 5 hp (2 point reduction first, then halved)?

On a related note, is percentile damage reduction from items like Ring of Iuz handled similarly to half damage from making a saving throw?

Answer: No, it's not handled like saving throws. If a damaging effect allows a saving throw, that "halving" occurs first. Then, any point-based reductions come into effect. Only after any point-based reductions do other fractional/percentage reductions take effect. In the ghoul example above, the 12 points of damage would first be reduced to 10 by the protective point-based items, and then reduced by half by the Ring of Iuz, resulting in 5 damage to the character.


Question: What about fractions?

Answer: All fractions are rounded down to the nearest whole number.
